Midnight sun festival completed! Time to collect camp and return to civilization. Midnight sun festival is one of my favorite celebrations. Why so? Because it can be celebrated as you like. Younger me collected a group of friends together. We hiked to the forest barbeque and drank too much. With family, we still do grill, but beer and vodka is replaced by juice and lemonade.

So what is this celebration? My ancestors believed that the sun reached home and had rested for a while before continuing its eternal journey. It was also the time when nature was most fertile, and heavy farming work was completed. It was time to do magic, drink, and have free sex long before hippies invented that.

In midsummer, gods were near, and high god Ukko was honored with sacrifices. Ukko is very similar to Scandinavian Odin but looks like Thor, and he is known as the god of thunder. He didn’t require human sacrifice, but he demanded his part from drinks and food. As a member of the family whose name means House of Ukko, it was good to leave some food also for forest animals and drop some vodka to the Bothnian gulf.

But now, back to normal. Time to start Karabert story.

A very happy and Blessed Solstice to you! I celebrated Longest Day here in the Seattle area, and since it is Saturday (which I consider sacred to Loki) I also toasted the eternal Trickster and Fire-dancer.
