Visiting the station to work on a school project was a game-changer for me. Initially, I was frustrated that I had to leave home and go alone, spending the entire morning training with the firefighters and writing about their profession.
The training itself and having lunch with all those guys (who were very polite, by the way) turned out to be enjoyable, but I felt somewhat overwhelmed by the surrounding masculinity. Then came shower time, and I was taken aback! They seemed to have no reservations about walking around, towels draped over their shoulders, exchanging glances and joking around. I felt embarrassed and nervous about undressing, feeling so small in comparison to those well-built bodies. It struck me that I was taller than most of the guys there, which strangely made me feel more at ease.
They started asking if I had a girlfriend and if she went by the nickname "Hollow." I simply smiled, but I had never experienced such a multitude of stimuli all at once in my life.
