Ynow what's interesting is Steven probably only needs to breathe if he thinks he needs to breathe. in the original canon when Steven got blasted into space he was able to breath when he put a bubble around himself but he was able to form the bubble while he was in a vacuum and breathe just fine! I mean its fine if you think he was just unconsciously storing air in his gem all along, it's just a theory after all.

New WD Theory. The "organic preservation pod" was supposed to contain baby Steven. WD didn't realize that giving birth/creating a hybrid would use her own gem. Thus the ship crashing shortly after takeoff (and shortly after depositing Greg as he was no longer needed). The pilot was suddenly gone and all that was left was the bebee.
