Many many years ago, MAD Magazine published a comic about the problem of "doggy doo" in the streets of New York. People were walking their dogs and not cleaning up after them. They chose link sausages as an acceptable stand-in for graphic depictions of YOU-KNOW-WHAT. Ever since then link sausages make me snicker. 

Yeah, I know how you feel, Chuck.
