Alpha Trion was one of the Original 13 Primes, and one of the last ones to still be living on Cybertron before the war. Unfortunately by then he had little authority and could do nothing to stop the blatant corruption in the Senate. The fact that AT himself used what little influence he had left to recommend Optimus to be the next prime is not widely known. The only other bots who know that are all dead. So the fact that AT shared that with Smokescreen tells Optimus that his old mentor trusted him. Also, Smokescreen is one of those names that has been used by multiple unrelated characters so Hasbro can maintain the copyright on it. This version seems to have been based on G1 Hotrod.
