This is my favorite anime of this season, everything is great: the story, the characters, the backstories and most importantly the planets. Each backstory is so realistic and well presented, it's what makes me want to watch the next episode. But the planets and their ecostystem is probably the best thing is this show. At first I was a bit concerned with how friendly the bird-thing was because it was too friendly and animals aren't supposed to be friendly with unknown other animals (an herbivore should run away) because this unknown animal could be a predator. The only way for this bird-thing to be friendly would be an absence of predator (like the dodo for our world). And that's exactly what happens, there are no predators because the mushrooms rule this planet (or at least this area) and the antidote is a plant. So being a predator would mean being carnivore and not being able to digest this plant, resulting in death for all the predators. This all come together in a very satisfying way to create a planet that feels very real (and cool since you can ride giant bird-thing).

Exactly. It's the characters, the flashbacks that flesh them out, and the living breathing alien worlds that is bringing me back for more too.
