Extrusion rate is the printing speed bottleneck once you have reliable flow. Here I'm running at half speed, but trying different combinations of temperature and fan placement to get better speeds. The e motor will skip if flow is constrained, as by too much viscosity, or if soft filament binds up inside the nozzle due to inadequate cooling of the cold end. For quality and reliability I'm opting to go a little slower, so I haven't pushed the speed envelope too far yet. With more tuning I'm aiming for infill at 150mm/s with ABS or PLA. If Ultimaker can do it then the Prusa i3 can do it too. Those are the Slimline Herringbone Gears made with glowing PLA, if you were curious.
