Mantis shrimp come in two varieties. There are the “smashers” and the “spearers,” named for their attack modes when hunting prey. With their spring-loaded, weaponized legs, these predators can crack a snail shell or harpoon a passing fish in a single punch. (Josh Cassidy/KQED)

Sea stars rely on their tube feet for more than just moving them around. Each of the hundreds of tube feet is also able to sense its environment. (Josh Cassidy/KQED)

Most animals don’t have the ability to detect electric fields. But sharks, rays, skates and sawfish — members of a group called Elasmobranchii — are experts at detecting electric signals. It’s one of their defining features. Elasmobranchs have specialized organs called Ampullae of Lorenzini. These tiny structures allow them to home in on weak bioelectric fields generated by nearby prey.(Josh Cassidy/KQED)
