LIPPSMACKER

Sharon, I so appreciate you watching and taking the time to expand my knowledge of this universe. I live for comments like this. I am so excited to continue this journey. I definitely picked up near the end that the ring was a powerful evil entity vs the people. I think the movie did a great job showcasing that even if I didn't fully perceive that until the end. So interesting to learn of the class differences and the lore between Elves and Dwarves. There is so much lurking below the surface here

Didn't want to bombard you with too much information, but I did want to clear up a few things about Aragorn and Boromir, because I think you mixed them up several times during the movie (no worries, I've actually seen this happen before, since some people tend to think the actors look alike and get them confused). When Aragorn was speaking with Arwen in Rivendell, you mentioned something like "wasn't she just holding hands with the other guy?", and near the end of the movie when Boromir was hit with the arrows, I believe you were wondering if "his necklace" would protect him, and I realized you may have been thinking of Aragorn's necklace. Arwen only ever interacts with Aragorn, never Boromir. We first meet Aragorn when he is called Strider (and the hobbits and others will sometimes still refer to him as Strider, since that's the name they knew first). Strider/Aragorn is the heir of Isildur (the one who cut the ring from Sauron's hand but then chose not to destroy it). He is therefore heir to the throne of Gondor (kingdom of men). Gondor has been without a king for years. Aragorn chose exile because he does not want to be king. He mentions he does not want that power, and fears he has the same blood and weakness as his ancestor that chose not to destroy the ring. As shown in the film, Arwen, an elf, has a relationship with Aragorn and it is he who is given the necklace. Boromir arrives in Rivendell as a representative of Gondor. His father is the "steward" of Gondor, which is not a king, but is the one currently in charge. He does not sit on the throne. As we see in the film, Boromir was easily corrupted by the ring. This does not mean he was evil or not a good man, the ring is evil and will corrupt. It just happened to Boromir first. This is why Frodo has to leave the fellowship, because it will probably corrupt the other members as well. Boromir cares deeply about his people and wanted to use the ring as a weapon to protect them. Foolish, but he still wanted to help his people. Boromir at first shows contempt towards Aragorn when he learns who he is, saying "Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king", but at the end of the film, after Boromir gives his life to defend the hobbits, he tells Aragorn "I would have followed you my brother. My captain. My King." That scene is so powerful to me and will always be one of my favorites. It's a tragedy that Boromir tried to take the ring. He immediately regrets it and confesses to Aragorn what he had done and says that he has failed them, but Aragorn says no, you fought bravely and kept your honor.
