(no copy required) I absolutely loved seeing what they did with Omashu and how some elements of the original show were empathised more while throwing out some others. This adaptation is proving to be a real fun time! Enjoy :)

Fun fact, the actor playing the Cabbage Merchant is the original voice actor! I got to meet him last year at a convention and he was so sweet. His performance was great in this! :)

Yeah you got to sort of think of this as a spin off rather than a remake, as soon as you do it gets so much better

Jenny D

A spin-off is more of a story about a side character from the original source. So like, if we got a show about what the Kyoshi warriors were doing during the gaang’s travels, for example. I think of this as more of a fanfiction, and I don’t necessarily say that as an insult. I’ve read some fanfics that are better written than some published books. Now, I’m not saying this show is the most well-written fanfic, but it’s still one that I’d read all the way through and enjoy most of it. And I’d be hoping the writer finishes the series (ie. Netflix greenlighting seasons 2 & 3).

Having watched the whole season, I think my biggest qualm is what they did with Bumi’s character. We never once saw King Bumi get angry in the animated series, and I didn’t like it here. Also, I’m confused how he knew Aang was the avatar. I mean, I guess he could make that assumption like Gran Gran did, but in the show I feel like it was implied that Bumi knew even as a kid. At least, there’s room for that because there was an indefinite amount of time between when the monks told Aang and when he ran away. I’m also a bit confused about why they put The Cave of Two Lovers in season 1. Maybe it’s just the childhood Kataang shipper in me, but I didn’t like most of what they did with it (although the subtle change of making both Oma and Shu women was a cool touch).

Michaela Jill Murphy (voice of Toph) had him as a guest for the Ember Island Players episode of her ATLA rewatch on YouTube, Tea Time With Toph, and he brought cabbage cookies he made from the official ATLA cookbook!

When Azula first showed up at the meeting with her hair under a cap, her face reminded me so much of this other actress I’ve seen, but who’s more than a decade older, and I was so distracted trying to figure out if that was really her that I wasn’t even thinking about the face of Azula I’d briefly seen in promo images. Then when I saw her in Fire Nation clothes letting the rebels into the palace I was like, hold up.

Kate

I've already watched the whole season and the beginning was amazing, but unfortunately, then everything got worse. My personal biggest disappointment is King Bumi and what they did with his character. Also, I don't see any chemistry between Aang and Katara, I mean they don't even bond with each other or learn waterbending together. Cabbage Merchant and secret tunnel song warmed my heart. And as before, I think Sokka's actor is the best of the cast.

Kitty Underwood

I have to say, Iroh and Zuko's story is definitely one of my favorite aspects of this remake. I will always love the OG Iroh more, but I am glad we are getting these moments with them in this. It's made me cry more than once already. As for something I don't like though, I don't like the change in Bumi's character. I do think the actor has done a great portrayal of Bumi, but I don't like the way they have written him. Also, half of the purpose for the tests in the animated show was to confirm Aang's identity and to have Aang guess his, but their introduction has them both knowing who the other is and then he still does the tests

Moss

Yeah i was thinking of it like a spin take on it, my wording was a little off, honestly its the best take on a show ive ever seen, granted ive not seen many, but Avatar has been my favourite “kids” show pretty much my whole life

TheCocoaCouch

To be fair Bumi knew Aang the second he saw him in the animated show which is why he tested him, to help him think differently and creatively like an avatar. It was just Aang who didn’t know. What I thought was more significant than just a plot twist was Bumi’s entire attitude towards Aang. I get what they were going for but it’s hard not to compare.

Stella Keil

I think for me the problem is not this show specifically, but live action adaptions in general. I get why it's being done, but I personally don't see the point of remaking something animated into live action. For me, live action will never come close to the artistic potential and beauty of animation. But that's more personal preference than anything else. And to give the creators some credit, it's a pretty bold move to touch a show that has been so incredibly sacred to a huge fan community for many years. And to do it in the knowledge that no effort will be enough to live up to the original and the expectations of the fans? Crazy

Kitty Underwood

He absolutely did know Aang immediately in the animated show, but still the vegetarian test specifically makes more sense before revealing that he knows who Aang is, to me at least. I am trying to view this show in a different light, but it is nice seeing that others have an issue with how Bumi was portrayed as angry in this lol. I am hoping though that moving forward he will be more like the animated version, since in the end he was swayed to Aang's side by the power of friendship

Jenny D

I’ve also read a theory that Bumi’s tests were to see how far along Aang was in his avatar training, or at least prepare him for each of the elements. The first test was obviously water. The second was earth—in season 2 Toph tells Aang he’s ready to earthbend after he stands his ground against a crazy beast, instead of running away from it. And the third test was fire (Bumi: you fight with much fire in your heart).

The show keeps getting better and better. Bumi’s humour 😂😂

I'm hating how little emotion and drive Katara displays in this series. She doesn't have the passion and anger that Katara has - and it's not the actress I think it's the writing and directing. She's so... passive. It really feels like they've toned her down too much to be more like an "acceptable" female representation. Ironic since they removed Sokka's explicit sexism but added in their own implicit sexism.

TheCocoaCouch

I agree she’s a bit blank but sexism was a jump and a half 😆 could be, who knows? I think they directed Azula pretty well and she has that cunning attitude I’m hoping evolves next season. I wonder if the director was going for a version of Katara that’s even more level-headed than in the animated show and it just didn’t work 😆 I guess we’ll have to see next season if we get one.

Carmi

See, implicit sexism isn't as obvious and in your face as explicit sexism, and I think I have a different viewpoint being a woman who has also studied this kind of thing. Katara's big emotions are part of her character like Aang's childishness and Sokka's sarcasm. Women have a long history of being told to act toned down, level-headed and not letting our big emotions show like this live action Katara because that is "acceptable" whereas og Katara's temper, her headstrong nature, her willingness to immediately stand up and fight, her 'aggressiveness' is not a socially acceptable way for us to be.

KaijinGarou

TBH Aang wasn't using airbending either other than to get back up, I don't know why. Zuko had to hide his bending but he didn't 😅

KaijinGarou

I dislike most changes they made but the additions are great, like the dialog between the earthbender and Iroh and the flashback with him and Zuko.

EdgingNothing

also correct me if im wrong but doesnt Aang and Katara start training together in season 2? From what I remember in the animated series she trained with a master in the water tribe at the end of season 1

KaijinGarou

Agreed. She's so flawless and boring here. I know some fans didn't like her in the OG but she certainly does not leave indifferent and no one can deny she has a strong personality. Sokka I can forgive some things they removed from his character because he's still pretty nuanced and accurate and they're doing pretty great with Zuko and Iroh but that's not Katara. I disliked Suki too and she's one of the best in the OG. I don't know what they're doing with our girls here. If they ruin Toph too, I'm done.

EdgingNothing

This series really has me perplexed. Up until this point, i have been fine with the changes that they have made. Even with your explanation with the writers side, I just dont like how they did bumi. Also with the whole relationship thing with Aang and Katara, my guess is because of their ages which makes sense to me. Some scenes in ep 3 and 4 were just very mid but some of the scenes in ep 4 were just amazing. Like the scene with the rock bender and Iroh. I do agree that the Katara's actress is not doing so well. Very bland acting. Everyone else is doing a good job imo even Aang's actor is doing a solid job. Not the best but solid for his age. Stand outs to me are the actors of Iroh, Zuko and Sokka. The scenes with Uncle and Zuko have been great and loving every scene with them. They have really good chemistry. The funeral was done so well. When zuko stopped and went back to talk to his uncle really hit. It sucks because during that scene someone at home was cutting onions at the same time. Same thing in the last flashback when they were about to set sail. So good.

Kate

They trained in the 1st season episode waterbending scroll. Katara showed him what she had already learned and they tried new moves from the scroll. At least they spent some time together)

KaijinGarou

Is it me or the little girl who played her in the flashback acted better?

Shannen Den Hartog

I don't mind the changes, I can overlook those but I do agree with you over Katara. This actress is trying, you can tell but there just isn't the oompf that makes Katara.. you know Katara. She's not witty, compassionate or motherly. She's just there. Wanting to be all grown up and be a "warrior". It's fine if this Katara wanted to be strong to make sure what happened to her mom doesn't happen to anyone else she cares about but she doesn't give off that energy. It just.. feels a little flat. Zuko and Iroh I really like this season. They did a great job on showing the relationship.

Geothro

I noticed each pair of episodes in this season has a different director, which I thought was interesting. I really appreciate and enjoy the optimism here compared to some other NATLA reactions I’ve been watching. It honestly makes it more enjoyable.

utafoxy

im really love how zuko and iroh are closer and that hes not as outwardly angry especially towards iroh
