This film ripped my heart out particularly at the end. What a beautiful story with incredible dialogue and a gorgeous score. It's been a while since I've seen a masterpiece like this! Enjoy :)

The scene with the practice swords in the rain- from what I remember culturally the wooden practice sword (bokken) is always supposed to be treated as if it’s a real sword. So at least as far as the samurai that ends up beating him down is concerned he is telling Algren to drop it like any other weapon.

Oh and a similar tone/story of film that’s less well known is Seven Years in Tibet with Brad Pitt. He’s a WWIi era German mountain climber who gets to know the Tibetan culture and learns to respect it. Based on a true story.

This film feels like pure movie magic with its cinematography and thoughtfulness of the characters. Honestly Tom Cruise might be the best action movie star lol.
