I had a really good time today with these two episodes. It is shocking though how quickly things have gotten complicated after the proposal. Anyway, last Friends reaction in the studio apartment woo!!! Enjoy :)

Girls Always

Before watching this, let's say something. I hate the way Rachel reacted this first episode. Her best friend finally gets what she wanted most and then she ruins the night by making it all about her and for what? Cause she's jealous. You can't change my mind about this, Rachel was awful this first episode!

saf

I still can't believe Jack and Judy had no money for Monica's wedding! And said about how since she's 30 they thought she'd "pay for it herself" when they were more than happy to offer to pay half for Ross and Emily's wedding and Ross was around 30 then too. I also love how Monica has been waiting for her wedding day her entire life and when chandler suggests not spending all the money on it and instead keeping some for their future together, she changes her mind. Which must've been a huge decision for her

Petra Marie

Loved it! Can you react to heartstopper? I think you’ll like it!

Girls Always

Seriously, Jack's funny sometimes but he and Judy (especially Judy) hate Monica. They're already rich, why do you take your daughter's money, without her permission, and spend it on something for yourselves when you already have your own money? And that about Ross's wedding, exactly. They offer to pay for half when Ross is around 30 but when Monica's around 30, they say you can pay it yourself

Raquel Perodin

I just don’t understand why Jack and Judy didn’t sell the beach house since that was with her money. But I get it it was to create conflict with Monica and Chandler. Gosh I know I’ve said it again and again but I’ll say it again. I just adore there relationship so much. Despite being the ones having the worst luck with relationships out of the groups and having the least self confidence and being the joke of most failed relationships and physical appearance. They are both so rational and healthy in their relationship with each other. You would think they would be a disaster but it’s the opposite, they are perfect together. despite having a disagreement they quickly resolve it. Don’t mean to compare but if it was Ross and Rachel it would have been blown way out of proportion and been a huge mess. Which is ironic because they are the two you would think would have the most successful relationships.

Rhetorical Thrill

It's not her money, it's theirs. They had expressed to her that they would pay for her wedding someday, so I do think it's gross they spent it multiple times without ever telling her, but it's not her money.

Rhetorical Thrill

Ah yes, the season where Phoebe fully devolves 😆 She's one of my favorite early characters but yeah...

Heida

I agree with the other comments about Jack and Judy and how badly they treat Monica. That being said, it was still unfair of her to expect (not even ask) that she and Chandler use ALL of the money on the wedding. If I understand correctly, this is money that he's been saving since long before he and Monica started dating. I get wanting a big fancy wedding and that's fine, but spending ALL of your savings on it is crazy! Sometimes people focus too much on that and not enough on the marriage part, which is probably the reason for at least half of the world's divorces. I'm glad Monica came to her senses though. I also agree that Rachel's behaviour in E1 was not cool BUT I understand it (clearly Monica did too) and she DID apologise. But, while Monica's point about them kissing in the hall where everyone can see was valid, no one did, and if she had not said anything no one would have found out (at least not that night). Also, I get why she was more pissed at Rachel because of their history but there were still two people kissing. Anyway, "I'm sorry, apparently I've opened the door to the past" is such a great line and Courteney's delivery is spot-on 😂 Also, going back to the Dr. Monkey joke in 6x12, even though it has never been confirmed whether it was Ross or Chandler who created it, Ross has clearly tried to claim certain ideas as his own throughout the series, like Jurassic Park in E2. Goofs: E1 is supposed to be the same night Chandler and Monica get engaged, yet if you notice Chandler's hair is different, his voice is higher-pitched and he is noticeably thinner. It's because of Matthew Perry's weight loss—this time due to alcohol-induced pancreatitis (he also went to rehab in between S6 and 7). Also, Rachel's hair was long in the S6 finale and in the S7 premiere her hair is a lot shorter, while Monica's hair is much darker and has a short side fringe. Monica said that Rachel is jealous that she is getting married first but Rachel technically got married first, to Ross in Vegas (though some people would not consider that a real wedding).

As happy as I am for Monica and Chandler, I wish we got more episodes about how the other friends (like Phoebe and Joey) are doing every once in a while like in the earlier seasons. I know more is to come obviously, but I feel like in the last season, we hardly get anything story-wise with those two in particular.

Teej

In that first episode, I feel like both Rachel and Monica were wrong. Rachel obviously shouldn’t have done that on the day of their engagement and in the hallway nearby. But Monica also made it super personal. I understand both perspectives. I just thought they both could’ve handled that better.

Paul

Always been curious how much Chandler had saved. I figure in the $50,000 range? Quite a lot to spend on a... party.

Teej

This is the first time I’m watching this series as an adult now, and as I’m going through, it’s sad to see how the focus is mostly on Rachel, Ross, Monica, and Chandler, and character-wise the writers kind of seemed to just use Phoebe and Joey solely as comic relief.

Rhetorical Thrill

Everyone gets cartoonified to a point but I think Phoebe suffers the worst for it. Joey just gets dumber but at least he stays sweet.

Rhetorical Thrill

It's one thing to blow a ton of money on a wedding when you actually have the money and aren't expecting someone else to bankroll it. Yes, they're joining finances but by my calculations Chandler had been saving for 4 years before they even got together and to immediately start acting like that money is hers to burn is exceedingly out of line in my opinion.

Teej

I am so different from Monica in most ways, but boy is her relationship with her parents very relatable!

TheCocoaCouch

I mean I see your point but also, they said it was for that purpose only, so I’d feel pretty betrayed as well. It isn’t that they stole her money, it’s that they’re horrible to her.

Jim Schmitz

Rhetorical Thrill

Oh yes, they're honestly pretty horrible people overall, and if they said they'd do it, it was wrong to spend it and not even tell her. But stealing her actual money would have been an insane plot point 😆

Big Bob

I should really set up a bingo for your reactions with stuff you might see coming :D

Marlaina Lindsey

Your face when Rachel was messing with Joey at the end was priceless lol 😂

Heather Geer

“I want a marriage.” Honestly, one of the best lessons Friends teaches its viewers. Monica is always slighted by her parents, which probably even more made her want something super special for herself. Chandler wants to give her everything…but her love for him means more to her than a childhood dream. That is couple goals right there 👌

Heather Geer

You’re not wrong lol. I don’t like how they devolve Phoebe’s character a bit either, but in my head I chalk it up to her just being spacey/less mindful about how she comes across with some things. Plus she never got a chance to be selfish growing up in ANY regard so she’s comfortable enough to be like that around her friends now. At least, that’s the narrative in my head for it 😂

I think Monica and Chandler are a really good example of a healthy TV relationship. As much as some parts of Friends have aged, that aspect really hasn't to me. They are both so understanding of each other's feelings and are quick to find meaningful compromises. All their relationship struggles are very realistic and rarely feel forced. You also feel safe in the knowledge that at the end of the day, they're a team. They feel like a modern couple in an equal partnership. A lot of shows spend a lot of time on the will they/won't they aspect of a struggling feature romance. Kind of like Ross and Rachel in the first half of the show. Since Chandler and Monica were such a sudden surprise to us and the characters themselves, we've gotten mostly storylines in the theme of an establishing relationship meant for the long haul. There's something very cozy about that and one of the reasons I think Friends managed to stay so lovable despite being so formulaic and on for so many seasons. This is my anxiety show. I often watch it during times of major change in my life. The first time I watched it, I was 16 (this was back in 2009) and my family was moving across the country in the middle of my junior year of high school. There was a 2-3 week period where we had already sold our house but there was still some weeks left in my school semester and so we were crashing with family friends. I was sleeping on the pullout couch in their basement and they happened to have a TV and the entire box set of friends. I had horrible insomnia due to the anxiety of the situation and so I binged the entire show during those weeks. It made me laugh and sigh and cry and laugh some more. It was episodes like this that ultimately made me feel secure that things change and challenges come up but in the end that's just life. I got the box set the next year at Christmas. I rewatched it my freshman year of college when I experienced my first major depressive episode. I rewatched it when I moved out of college and to city far from all my friends and family. I rewatched it when my grandpa died. This isn't the juiciest episode or spiciest or even among the funnier ones. But to me, this episode is a perfect example of why this show is so beloved and why its legacy has lasted.

You are right. Phoebe is a very complicated character. She is a very principled person but sometimes she doesn't follow her principles, sometimes she's very smart, sometimes she's really dumb, sometimes she's really smart, sometimes she has an outburst out of nowhere. Lol. I love Phoebe. She is the most unique character ever on TV

Kitty Underwood

I still use the gif of Joey saying "sup, dude?" all the time lmao

Kitty Underwood

So with the budgeting of the wedding, they did say that Chandler made enough for "wedding scenario A" and he said he didn't want to spend *all* of the money. So I'm sure after she says in the end they don't have to spend it all, that they are going to still spend some of it and she probably has at least wedding scenario b and c picked out already, if not more. So they will still have a niceish wedding, just not the nicest of all the ones she had planned

Alicia Cue

a big wedding with like 200 guests like chandler said, and me thinking about monica and her *ideal* plan A wedding, i’d be willing to guess that wedding would cost upwards of like $200-$350k because venues in NY, that’s your $50k right there at least, catered menus there’s another close to $30k and then add a designer dress probably another close to 10k, band, flowers, wedding planner etc etc that shit adds up so quick. so it would be absolutelyyyy insane to spend all of that money, especially if that’s ALL your money on it

Liam

I think pheobes funny but i dont like her that much as shes very very selfish and manipulative, also if was selfish of monica to expect chandler to spend all his savings on the wedding.

Paul

True, although it was the 90s, so you could cut those numbers in half or more. Still, Chandler had quite a bit indeed, no wonder he always wanted to help Joey.

Andrea Kasuboski-Freeman

So odd and interesting the little scenes are not on US version of the show. When Joey says he can smell Phoebe for eating his candy bar, we saw a different scene where they kept saying “ would she” and ending up say it sounds like “wood cheese”.

StonyD

I have a fan theory that Phoebe is usually drunk most of the time. She and Monica's friendship comes from the bar they used to frequent (that became a coffee shop), as many allusions to Monica's drinking goes all the way back to Fun Bobby days. Phoebe is known for loading up at free bars and while in Vegas. And essentially, it would explain her moody antics at times.

StonyD

Those extended moments are part of the disc versions. But streaming tends to use syndicated edit versions for some reason.
