Okay, I think I lied. I don't care how shitty Nathan's dad is. I no longer feel bad for him. Fuck him.

Also, I totally don't want Lucas and Haley to be fighting! They are both on the same side. They just don't realize they are going about it differently. Communicate!

Payton finally breaking up with Nathan was such a highlight! He tried to put her on the hook for his drunk driving bullshit. (And she doesn't even know that!) Lucas and Peyton are gonna end up together eventually, right?

Lol everyone hates Nathan so I was just a little surprised when you showed so much empathy for him before, but this time I think the show did a good job in showing that Nathan is a terrible person by his own volition and not just because of his dad pressuring him with basketball. I am surprised that you have liked Peyton. She’s such a b*tch to me always sulking, and her being with Nathan in the first place says a lot about her as a person. It’s like she only started to see a problem with his behavior once it affected Lucas and not just because Nathan is a terrible person this whole time to everyone else as well. They are teenagers tho so I give them just the tiniest bit of patience while watching. Deb is a nice touch to the Nathan and Dan dynamic and figuring that situation out.

I really, really hate Dan. So it was sort of easy to blame a lot of Nathan's awfulness on him. But this episode really showed that it's not just Dan who is the driving force behind Nathan. Nathan really does seem to be acting of his own accord. I don't know. Something about Peyton really makes me drawn to her. It could be because she reminds me of myself as a teenager. It could be because I see potential in her as a human. I'm not really sure yet. But I suspect, with 190 episodes (or something crazy like that), my opinions will shift multiple times on everyone! True. I often have to remember that teenagers are entitled to a bit of drama when I watch shows like this.

I was really proud of Peyton for standing up to Nathan and then breaking up with him. Regarding her comic strip, I think she did write it how she wanted to. But it goes back to the scene on the river court when she told Lucas that maybe some people aren’t ready to expose themselves to the world. I think when she got the negative reaction from Brooke and others at the party it triggered emotions for her and made her somewhat regret being vulnerable because it wasn’t received well. I too am drawn to Peyton as a character. I appreciate her emotional struggles and storylines as an adolescent character which can sometimes be overlooked for typical high school storylines (i.e., relationships, cheerleading, parties, etc). Her character has so much depth for such a young age on a teen drama. But I also think the depth is what makes her so relatable. Because although all the things mentioned above are important to some high schoolers, adolescence is really a time where a lot of change is happening and questions about life in general start to be pondered. She reminds me of a teen with mental health concerns who often gets overlooked or misunderstood. I’m enjoying your reactions!

I don't necessarily disagree with you. Nathan can make his own decisions and doesn't have to be asshole. But I also don't think that we can give even the slightest pass to Dan. It's the classic nature vs nurture case. Dan is really pushing Nathan... being like "don't you care that your dreams are falling away," "Lucas is your enemy." He just has Dan's voice literally echoing in his head like a cacophony. The editors made a interesting choice in episode 2 or 3. Nathan is about to leave for a game and Dan is badgering him per the usual and they made Dan's voice echoey. Dan's voice just sounds like this loud echo in Nathan's head. I literally don't think that Nathan hears his father say anything but "you need to do better," "you'll never be as good as I was," "Lucas is taking everything from you." He walks into any room and his father jumps down his throat and badgers him. I do have a lot of empathy for Nathan during this time. Sure he's an asshole but I think it's so clear even at this time that Nathan could have been so totally different if he had a solid dude like Keith as a father. Everyone in his life avoids Dan like the plague and by extension has isolated Nathan from any good influences. Also I just thought of something. Probably part of the reason he's being so mean to Lucas is that he thinks that if he gets rid of Lucas then maybe his father won't fucking badger him so much. Maybe that will silence Dan a little bit and he will leave him alone. And he's being so mean because Lucas is pretty obviously going after his girlfriend. Not that it's a good excuse for his behavior (afterall 2 wrongs do NOT make a right), but I don't think we talk enough about how fucked up that is. Also I am so glad that Peyton ditched Nathan. She deserves better than how she was being treated.

This show is so good at making complex characters. Every episode (I'm a bit ahead), I'm back and forth about being super annoyed at Nathan and feeling badly for him because he has to live with Dan (who gets zero empathy- and I cannot imagine a situation where I could give him any). It's interesting you bring up the echoey voice because I couldn't decide if it was supposed to be 'my dad is constantly yammering in the background, and I pay no attention to him' or 'ALL I can hear, ever, is my dad telling me I'm not good enough.' I assume it's the latter now, having seen more episodes. I didn't really think about how everyone trying to steer clear of Dan (because why wouldn't you if you had the option?) also means that Nathan tends to end up with no one around him except his father. Also, I have no idea how Nathan does it. He's an asshole, yes. He really is. And I'm not excusing that, but how he puts up with Dan day after day and doesn't totally snap and get violent with him is beyond me.

Oh, I didn't put that together. That's a really good point. I think I was more focused on what the editor said vs what she wanted to draw. I wasn't really thinking about how her peers would see it. That's part of what I like about Peyton (and all these characters, actually). They seem like real people. They aren't just good or bad (minus Dan, he's just all bad), but they are complex. Sometimes, they do the right thing; sometimes, they make the wrong choices and decisions. Also, I think people often discard teen shows as nonsense or fluff but forget how hard it really is to be a teenager. I often wonder how I made it to adulthood. High school was so difficult for me and pretty much everyone I knew. Thank you! I'm having so much fun with them!

I wish you had a tier for where you are currently. I'm so impatient lol.

BookBoundPodcast337

Actually, I'm planning to add extra episodes to the $15 tier starting in January. I'm also doing 5 in a row for the holidays in December, the 22-26. Glad to know it might be well received!

Heather

Just signed up. Can't wait for the binges and will definitely upgrade to a higher tier!

BookBoundPodcast337

Hi! Welcome! We'll do a mini binge in December and by January, I should have enough recorded to offer at least 3 a week at the $15 tier.
