As I work my butt off on my Dark Brotherhood costume this weekend (progress photos coming soon!), I wanted to have a series of blog posts where I breakdown past cosplays to show how I saved money. I generally don't spend more than $150 on each costume, and even my more elaborate costumes are less than $250, because I always try to find the cheapest, but still quality, way to replicate the look I want for each costume!

Let's start with Yang!

Fabrics:

My main fabrics for Yang were bought at Joann's. All were faux suede that I backed with brown bottomweight to create structure (I line everything with bottomweight). I chose suede instead of something flatter just to create texture. I liked that the paisley had roses in it, to reference her sister, maybe, and just in general love texture in photos! :

Microsuede Paisley in Tan

-- 12.99/yard (50% coupon and 20% total purchase coupon), 1.5 yards = $7.80

Home Decor Suede in Cocoa

-- On Sale for 17.49/yard and 20% total purchase coupon, 2 yards = $28

Home Decor Suede in Cognac

-- On sale for 17.49/yard with 20% total purchase coupon, .5 yards = $7

Bottomweight in Potting Soil

-- On sale for 5.99/yard with 20% total purchase coupon, 3.5 yards = $21

Gauze in white

-- on sale for 5.99/yard with 20% off total purchase coupon, 1 yard = $5

Yellow stretch knit (bought from local fabric store, SR Harris) $6/yard at .5 yards = $3

Orange knit (bought from local fabric store, SR Harris) $6/ yard at 1.5 yards = $9

Purple cotton (bought from local fabric store, SR Harris) $3/yard at .5 yards = $1.50

So far, I spent $82 on fabric.

I also bought a very small piece of heat n' bond for the heart symbols for $2.50. I took a piece of scrap yellow and heat n' bonded it to the finished skirt piece, and then painted it to get an ombre effect:

For the jacket, the pattern I used was this one, which I own about five of because it's so adjustable to fit any top/jacket that has princess seams. Stock up on patterns when they're on sale!!:

Accessories:

I bought the boots at Savers for $12.99

And the wig is two of these wigs from from Ebay for $13 each:

As well as a long curly clip from Arda Wigs in Platinum Blonde: https://arda-wigs.com/shop/long-curly-clip-classic/

So the wig, in total was $45! That's A LOT more than I usually spend, but I wanted the wig to be very full and bouncy! I combined the two yellow wigs into one wig, and then took apart the curly clip and added it to the bottom of the wig.

The Gauntlets were created with EVA foam, craft foam, plasti-dip, yellow gloss spray paint, and acrylic paints, which I already had all of, sitting around my house!

I already had the belt, but I had bought it from Goodwill previously, so it was probably quite cheap. The little shorts and gloves are also something I already owned!

So, in the end this costume cost me$142, give or take. I'm actually completely flabbergasted by this. I could've sworn I spent HALF this on this costume :D Well, goes to show you how quickly money disappears!

I'm okay with the amount I spent, though, because I hope to wear this costume a lot. It's well-made, easily travel-able, and a character I love!
