This is a general break down of the proportions of a young babies head (1 yr old). Of course, there are many different shapes and sizes, and arrangement of features, but there a few things we can keep in mind.

Height Spacing

  • From the side, the head fits fairly well into a perfect square.
  • The bottom of the brow-line is roughly half way up.
  • Dividing the face into equal thirds from the brow-line down; the point of the nose is one third down; the corners of the mouth, another third down; the bottom of the chin bone, another third down.
  • The eyebrows sit quite high up on the forehead.
  • The forehead is very rounded.

Width Spacing

  • The jaw is almost square in shape, compared to older children.
  • Dividing the face into equal fifths; the eyes are a fifth wide, the nose also and the distance between the outer corners of the eyes and the farthest ends of the cranium.

Be careful when it comes to applying shading. Gradations are very soft and subtle. Overdoing the shading might make your subject appear bruised or strange looking, so apply only the lightest of strokes and blend softly.
