READ THE WHOLE DESCRIPTION!!! Full brush guide is BELOW

Please keep in mind this is mostly PROCREATE focused -- since that's my program of choice!

HAPPY NEW YEARS Everyone!! With the start of 2021 it's time to create and compile an updated brush guide. I still use PRETTY MUCH every single brush from my old guide (even still) but since I've found some new favorites, I wanted to explore them with all of you! I'll be shying away from general 'inking' brushes in this guide since I covered that pretty extensively in my last couple guides! There's a lot of great brushes in these links...check them out!

Once again, a little disclaimer: These brushes are not necessary, but if you're anything like me and either

a) don't have time to make your own brush settings

b) too lazy

this might be the perfect guide for you! Usually I'll take these brushes and make very minor edits to them to get it just right. Certain brushes work better for certain things, but these are totally optional and I'm putting it out there so maybe it will help you!

NOW ONTO THE BRUSHES!

DEFAULT BRUSHES (these are free and come with downloading the program Procreate) I won't lie, I've really been into these brushes since the update.

  • Tinderbox ... perfect brush for bold linework. I love using this brush for stickers, pins, and outlines
  • Syrup ... a little 'sharper' than tinderbox, this brush is great for clean sharp lines. There isn't a hint of blurriness in the edges of the pixels on this brush, so it can be great if you're a very sharp clean linework person.
  • Studio Pen ... honorable mention because this brush can be great if you tweak some settings as well
  • 6B Pencil ... honestly I can't rave about this brush enough. I had friends put me onto this brush and it's AMAZING when you use it for lineart and really use it to shade in small details. Great for hatchwork lines.

JINGSKETCH I've preached enough about this brush in previous posts, but I am not kidding when I say this is my most used brushes and brush packs. I won't go into detail on these since I have before, but I wanted to include them for transparency. https://gumroad.com/jingsketch?recommended_by=search#dDVWl

  • Pencil ... This brush is actually one of my recently most used and favorite lineart brush as of late. I've been really into textured lines because I think it can give the art some life to it.
  • Clean Sketch ... another slightly textured brush that's been a favorite of mine for some time. I really like how this brush feels, I actually looked at the setting of this brush to tweak some others to get them to feel the way this one does.

Textured Brushes / Coloring

WATERCOLOR MAXPACK https://maxpacks.com/watercolor-maxpack Really this pack is an amazing addition to your collection. I downloaded these to help with simple textures in my backgrounds and clouds and WOW! What a blast it is! If you're in my telegram chat, you also saw me demonstrate this with a brush stylus for the iPad and lemme tell you...it's a life changer! They also include a smudge pack and some paper textures when you buy this pack, which is soo helpful.

(used in this piece here)

Maxpack also has other REALLY good packs  -- I highly recommend checking the rest of their brushes out!

Another favorite of mine is their painting pack: https://gumroad.com/l/BebTg?recommended_by=library and their retro pack: https://maxpacks.com/retro-maxpack

The basic grungy scribbler is a brush apart of a pack here (i THINK) by the big megapacks, but since I changed the name I can no longer find the original pack this is from. I'll keep looking and update when I find it though!
