Fun fact, this show was so successful the showrunner, Craig Mazin, was told by HBO he basically had a blank cheque to make whatever passion project he wanted, and so he chose to make The Last of Us.

I loved Chernobyl and was happy to see Craig Mazin adapt Last of Us. I can't find anything saying that he was given free range by HBO to do anything and he chose Last of Us. I watched a few interviews that didn't give any of that kind of implication. Do you have any links by chance?
