Considering how dark Attack on Titan gets, when I first watched these episodes, I was expecting to see both Armin & Erwin succumb to their injuries before the injection. Like, because of the time Eren spent arguing with Levi over who should live, both would die. Now, THAT would have been a dark outcome.

This may have shaken and broken you more than anything so far... but if everything has been building up to whatever is in the basement, then think of that as the first big drop of a roller coaster. Many heart-pounding twists and turns to come. Also may induce screaming, lightheadedness, tears, and random curse words. But it's gonna be fun :)

There really is no right answer, it's an impossible choice, but not worst case scenario. Without the syringe, they would've lost BOTH Armin and Erwin, and it's hard to imagine a future for them without Erwin AND Armin.

Between the two, I think Armin is definitely the better choice and would be more responsible with that power as none of his plans ever involved sacrificing others, only himself. I strongly recommend sticking with Crunchyroll. The blu-ray subtitles are horrendously bad and really take away from the show, especially in Season 4. It would also confuse many of your fans, as nearly everyone uses Crunchyroll, and it’s painful seeing your favorite lines get ruined in the blu-ray subtitles.

i downloaded the bluray episodes at sphinxanime, where you can find the files with many subtitles options (such as crunchyroll subs). The thing is that im a native spanish speaker, so idk if they are available in eng subs, at least the episodes of s4 part1 are

I think that the choice of Levi has always been heavily misunderstood by most people. Here’s how I view it: Levi remembered Kenny’s words about that «all are a slave to something», and that you need that something to push you forward. Erwin’s «something» was finding out the truth which they think is in the basement. That means that if they revive Erwin, he would very quickly find the truth and hence loose his «something» which will make him loose his drive to push him forward. Armin on the other hand is a slave to «discovering the outside world» (see the sea), and hence he will still have a drive for a long time going forward. That’s why Levi choose Armin. Not because «Erwin wanted Armin to have it». It’s the opposite. Erwin recently said that he would even sacrifice humanity to find the truth (s3 ep 11 or 12), so he would be super happy to be revived. That’s why he is raising his hand in the end as well bevause he’s still so fixated on finding the trouth. But Levi rationalized that choosing Armin is ACTUALLY the best for humanity, because he will still have the drive inside of him

Well said man, that’s exactly how I thought about it without putting the words to paper. Levi although grew to admire Erwin, he still saw the bigger picture in that the “devil” needs to rest now. And in Armin’s eyes is a slightly different perspective on humanity.

Both Erwin and Armin are valuable to humanity but Armin is the best choice. The first time I watched it I thought Erwin was the best choice(which evidently its the logical choice) but it’s not quite that simple! Erwin is the devil that was needed to fight for humanity but who knew what wouldve happened if he got a second chance. I still contemplate that predicament as If I was there with the syringe!

Thank you for this whole-hearted reaction. Even after having watched this episode several times, I cried with you again. I think Levi took the right choice. RIP Commander Erwin, you will always be in our hearts.

One of the hardest episodes to watch because everyone in that situation is entirely valid. You want both Armin and Erwin to survive and both sides have just as compelling arguments as to why who they care about should be saved. That being said Armin made the most sense, Erwin had essentially achieved what he needed to. With the retreat of the other titans and Bert's death, nothing stops them from reaching the basement, the truth Erwin sought, whereas Armin still has much more to do and a mindset needed to rebuild humanity long in the future. Erwin was the present, the world of titans, the everyday hell. Armin is the future, the world beyond the titans, the optimistic sea of freedom that lies beyond the now.

There are so many things fans like talking about concerning rewatches, many of them pertaining to Rein and Bert obviously. But I love seeing in retrospec how insightful and right Sasha turns out to be over and over. So many of her lines and actions are taken as jokes on the first watch but with context, things like annie liking sweets have so much more meaning. How much sugar can actually be produced inside the walls? Weird that a poor girl from the outer wall really has a taking for them? Nope just laugh its Sasha.

Since it wasn't explained well in the anime, let me try to do it. Erwin didn't shove the injection intentionally away, he RAISED his hand UNCONSCIOUSLY because of his strong desires to find out the answers to his question, on the verge of death. In the manga, it was portrayed as Levi chose Armin because he still has that drive to keep on going; to keep pursuing freedom. The moment Erwin unconsciously raised his hand when Levi was about to inject him and uttered what he asked to his teacher, which was his father, that was when Levi made a decision. In Erwin's case, Levi thought that maybe if Erwin finally got his answer to his literal lifelong dream he had with his father when he questioned him "Are there really no more humanity outside the walls?" when he was still studying, would he still have that "drive" to keep him going and fight for humanity? Or would he just lose interest because he got what he wanted? Now Levi knew Erwin was kinda selfish with a heart, so he thought that Erwin would no longer be as enthusiastic and motivated to keep on going if he got his answers, on Eren's basement. Levi remembered Kenny's last words right then and there the moment he realised all of this, which was "Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep on going". So if Erwin sobered up and lost his drunken self, he'd be unmotivated to fight some more. Wherein Armin's case, as I've said, he has dreams. He's still drunk on the thoughts of being totally free. Hope I explained it well.

I think when Jean was questioning himself after convincing Hange not to kill Reiner, he was doubting himself. He was wondering if he was still hesitating in key moments, in this case allowing Reiner to live in that moment because he didn't want to see him die like that, even though he gave tactical reasons to spare him. Maybe sympathy and hesitation was part of it too.

Just wanna remind you that in Levi's OVA, Levi was hired to kill Erwin. In the scene where they crossed path with the red/blue coloring, Levi said, and I quote "I don't care how long it takes, Erwin, I promise you, you WILL die by MY hands." Funny how the same sentence said back then has a completely different meaning now ;) Levi takes his promises very VERY seriously, and the last promise he made to Erwin, was to kill the beast titan, but he failed, even after chasing him through dozens of titans and making it to the wall, Levi really tried to keep that promise... but i guess at least he kept the other promise to ensure that Erwin died by his hands. Another fun fact about the Levi OVA, when he was full of rage for losing his 2 friends from the undercity, and he was on his horse, Levi's outro monologue before riding off with the scouts was "I cant see what he (erwin) sees, he's always looking ahead, and he's constantly seeing past anyone else can, and even if < I > can't see what he sees, I have to trust that he's leading us towards a better future for us... erwin, as long as you keep looking forward and follow these dreams, I will always follow your lead." And so this mirrors another scene in this this trilogy episode and they hinted at the correlation in the flashbacks this episode: Levi kept asking Erwin what will he do now? And Erwin kept saying that he only wants to see what's in the basement. Levi realized also deep down that the person who's always looking up and ahead, is now fixated on nothing but looking down and closeby towards that basement, the basement that's "just in reach" according to erwin... Erwin's a great leader, but he's jaded, and tired of being the devil that's leading everyone through hell, he's not looking forward anymore, he's not looking further out, towards the horizon of unknowns like when Levi first joined him.. Erwin's tired, he's done, he had a dream that no one else could see, especially levi, but now levi can see it, they ALL can see this basement, and so erwin's not seeing past it, that's all he wants to see and to know, he wants vindication and truth for the events that he triggered that lead to his father being called as blasphemous and killed and silenced... Erwin is drunk on this need to get answers from the basement... Hell even Kenny called it out in levi's flashback that everyone here has to be drunk on something for them to keep fighting through hell to get peace (and ironically that's the very scene that he gave levi the serynge that is being used in this very episode). Erwin, when he punched away the serynge in this episode, looked like erwin's back to being a young kid in class, raising his hand to ask a question to his father/teacher... it's in the flashbacks of when erwin would talk about his father, and how his foolish son asked too many questions about the world and got him killed... and he even quoted himself from that flashback as his final words on his deathbed on the roof: He was asking about what's outside the walls and why the truth is not accessible to everyone. It may seem like he didnt get his closure, but like Erwin told the scouts as he's marching them to their death against the beast titan: we will die, but we will have to entrust our hopes AND DREAMS to those that come after us to see it through, we will live on their memory and our sacrifce will help them march forward towards that truth (instead of us) like all the ones who died along the way FOR us (which also mirrors erwin's monologue a couple of episodes back about how he lead everyone to their deaths to reach his dream, he was standing on a pile of their bones to find that truth and achieve his dream.... but unlike the pessimistic take he had about it last time, this time he's taking a positive approach, he was going to be part of that pile of bones, he finally understood that the guilt he felt is not what the fallen would have wanted for him... the same way he wouldnt want the successors to feel the guilt for his death either... and to instead, use it as a fuel to keep going forward. His solders fight, his soldiers ride, his soldiers rage, his soldiers die, but their dreams live on... In other words... Levi and erwin both realized that Erwin's done, he got them this far, but he can't see outwards anymore... but guess what.. Armin's telling Eren and everyone about the Sea.. about these untold places past the walls that no one has seen, and ARMIN is now the one that's looking past the horizon, towards the unknown, which is the very trait that made levi follow Erwin's command... Erwin couldnt see past the basement, but Armin's not thinking about the basement, he's thinking about the life AFTER the basement, AFTER the threats, AFTER the deaths and losses.. he's driving eren and others to a hopeful future about nature and beauty and untold legends... not a truth buried in a basement like erwin is.. Armin is now the one looking forward, even erwin saw it before, and that's why erwin kept putting Armin in positions of leadership and intellectual strategy, he saw the fire in him and the burning need for knowledge and wonder (no pun intended).... and this, this is what went through levi's head in those precious seconds, sisters: A promise made to erwin to finish him off in the OVA, that was kept (unconventionally), and another promise made to erwin to keep following him as long as he looks to the future (which he kept, even when chased by annie, he just trusted in erwin)... and even in respecting his wish when he pushed out the serynge, he followed erwin's lead... and finally, he saw armin as the future, laid his friend to rest... but all these promises kept, there's only one left: he promised to kill the beast titan... and he failed. Armin, Levi, and everyone on that roof have to live with that ultimatum that they made... no matter where it takes them... and we, the viewers, are just watching the story being told.

I loved your reactions on this sequence of episodes. Especially this one. You were so genuine in your reaction when Bertholt is being eaten. Some people cheer, some people are mad, but i believe someone who has the genuine empathy the characters evoque will suffer seeing Bertholt asking for help. Such genuine tears, i just wanted to hug Haylo, you could actually see the toll of these episodes. The 2 of you are gems, you will be strong and endure this, we will accompany you <3 BTW: You actually reminded me of my best friend, when she first saw this episode. At the end she said "i'm need to get some air" she went to the balcony and just cried silently for 15min. One of my favorite episodes and maybe the best sequence of episodes up until this point.
