"Silence Lay Steadily"

We thought we were coming here to scream not cry 💔😭
We were blown away by this ending and how it wrapped up the story with a heartbreaking little bow. We plan on watching a "where are the ghosts" video and discussing the show a bit more next week! Thanks for suggesting this, we seriously loved it!!

FIRST. Totally wasn't waiting or anything :D

Joshua Coldwater

This series is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The characters, the stories, the emotion, and every word had a distinct purpose. True beauty.

@haylee, @kiss, you want me to break your mind for a second? If you watch this show again, every single time that the mother was just the coping mechanism "memory" of the dad, she was wearing a normal dress. Every time the mother was "tricking" the kids to get them to come home, and every SINGLE time that the show was portraying an "illusion" of "fakeness", she was wearing a RED dress... like the RED ROOM, with the RED DOOR, with the red lights coming around the corner to show them fake dreams and keep them IN THE ROOM.. while the house fed on them... All under the guide of "waking them up".. Red = Fake/Dream/Lies while the house tricked them to STAY... Fun fact right? Unrelated note: That dining scene where kiss said "they're SEVEN again"... They were celebrating that luke's alive and clean for 2 years, while shirley and her husband are together again, and steve and his wife and together again and PREGNANT, and while theo's close and touchy and letting her walls down to celebrate this HAPPY moment... Every single one of them got their "wish", their dream, or resolved their problems... Such a happy moment, such a happy memory, and like Steve kept saying, ghosts are a memory, a regret, or a wish... They started out as 7 and finished the story as 7. And they werent alone anymore, they walked together. They started out separated and ended up together... awww... What a beautiful scene that wrapped this whole story together! Oh but just one last thing about that ending scene: *What was the color of the cake?* Dwell on that for a minute :) K bye now :P

Joshua Coldwater

I can only imagine, this entire show had to have been a nightmare to edit. Especially episode 6, it is so beautifully directed with those four long one shots- like who would I be, as an editor myself, to break ANY of those up? 🤣

This series is perfect. Can't get better than this, but the rest of the Flanigan shows are also excellent. Would highly recommend giving them a shot in release order. They're also as short as this one (one season each).

Joshua Coldwater

I actually know a little bit more about that final scene. It was shot twice. One was what the “Netflix Production Team” wanted and one was what Mike Flanagan wanted. His edition made the cut, he threatened to pull the show from the platform. In the Netflix edition they start the shot with Luke, backup slowly, same cake, same people, same energy, same pregnancy, but behind them isn’t a few pictures and a mirror. It was the window from the Red Room. Mike made it VERY CLEAR, that he was a horror movie and show artist but he would never and will never leave ANYONE guessing when the show is complete.

Charles Malo

I haven't seen the other series like the haunted mansion etc.. Are they worth the watch actually ? I was woried that they wouldn't hold up to this story.

Charles Malo

I actually heard of that. I think that's why they found a compromise in the end where any sane watcher would watch the show and hear steve's ending words that started the show, and be like "YUP that's a wrap on this mini series". So Mike Flanagan got his wish on that. But i think netflix snuck the red in as a hidden easter egg for the not-so-sane viewers that watch something too many times (guilty...) and the Attack On Titan watcher in me caught the red thing earlier and i kept looking for it and so when that scene happened i was like "OH NO." but here's the funny thing: No matter what ending you believe in, whether the red cake meant something or not, the show itself WAS COMPLETE, good or bad, it was complete. So it doesnt go against Mike's wishes, but you can say that Netflix with the red logo got their cake, and ate it too. :P It's not like inception where the thing happened at the end that left people wondering "wait, is this over?" it was too much in the foreground to have a realistic answer. Whereas this one is more subtle: you watch it and can get a happy ending, you watch it and can get an "oh no" ending... But in both cases : it was an ending :D

Personally, I rate Midnight Mass as the second best one because it has some gorgeous monologues, fantastic performances, and does a really clever thing tying in elements of horror and religion. Bly Manor is a distant third. I like that one but it's a bit meh for me at points. Hill House remains the undisputed #1 for me, just with the themes, the way it's shot, the placement of ghosts, etc. I'd recommend watching all of them anyway, though. Comparatively not as good as the best thing is still pretty great.

Each story is set in a different time period with a completely different, complex, and beautiful story. They, at no point can even be compared to each-other, just based on their stories. This series was loosely based on the Shirley Jackson Novel. The Haunting of Bly Manor was the next series, and that is loosely based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Those two books are in completely different genres, so the shows should be expected to be VERY different. He then created Midnight Mass, which was a work that he personally wrote, again another AMAZING show- genre that hadn’t been explored before. His final Netflix series that recently premiered is The Fall of the House of Usher, this is lightly based on a 1839 story from Poe but moreover based on Poe’s entire work. This is also his first show considered Giallo Horror (slasher). He also has directed some of, in my opinion, the BEST horror films. (Oculus, Hush, Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep) He works with, what we call in the business, his “Flavengers”, you will see the same cast members in almost every film and television show that he creates. He always has a couple guests, but he keeps his core the same. This allows him to trust the actors and actresses with EXTENSIVE monologues and amazing one takes. Even the camera work in the next series, you’ll see it stays on their faces’ a lot longer than anyone would be comfortable with, and they just keep acting. I am a huge fan of this man, would I rate everything as high as The Haunting of Hill House, no. I can honestly say this show was 100/100. Every other show is at LEAST a 92, and two of his films are just below. So i wouldn’t let this show defer you.

Joshua Coldwater

Oh I completely agree, there is even a scene he mentions in a future series that he did not want shot. Netflix required it “to better explain the horror”, he said “They are treating my fans like they are infants.” They recorded the scene and inserted it into the show without his knowledge. There are a few reasons he is leaving Netflix 🤣

One of the best shows of all time. The Haunting of Hill House is a masterpiece. It's so, SO well done. And now you two have to watch the other Mike Flanagan shows. Next: The Haunting of Bly Manor Midnight Mass The Midnight Club Please. Thanks.

I think kiss literally went "boo hoo" at one point lmao. Can't say I blame her. One of the most moving shows I've ever watched. Lots to learn about grief and healing.

The first reactors i’ve ever ever seen to make all the connections!!!!!!! Holy smokes omg. Most people don’t connect the theo part to the tall man. Loved the reaction so much. Yall have to watch his others in release order!!! So good. He’s my all time favorite.

Haha I manage to cry every time. Thank you so much for your wonderful reactions. What a trip. And echoing everyone requesting you watch the rest of Flanagan's shows!

Matt Brock

I'm new here so I don't knownif anyone has ever mention but the actor who plays the younger version of the dad is Elliot from E.T.

Michel Ferreira

The ending is so brilliant and heartbreaking! Thank you so much for the reactions. Others have suggested “Bly Manor” and “midnight mass”. May I also suggest “The Fall of the House of Usher”? It is also by Mike Flannagan and based on Edgar A Poe’s poems. It is EPIC

Lots to say about this finale, when I first watched this, my father had cancer and I had struggled to understand him and get along with him. Now watching this again with you two today and my father is gone. I finally get the man he was, the man he struggled to try to be, I have closure. This show is very connected to me on a personal level and it means so much to have watched it again with you two. Now I spoke episodes back about a theme that connects all the members together in a really cool way and now you've seen the finale, I think it'd be cool for you to learn about it. So all the Crain siblings theoretically represent each of the stages of grief in descending order. Steven represents Denial, creating lies and ignoring truths in order to make himself feel better. Shirley represents Anger, anger at herself for cheating and anger she vents onto others like Steven for the book, her husband for the money/guilt. Theo represents Bargaining, a character stuck between the feelings of the past and the difficulties of the present and trying to merge the two, she accepted the money for Steven's book and she also acts a somewhat middle point for the family. Luke obviously represents Depression, his constant cycle of drug abuse and isolation from the rest of the family creating a distinct and very apparent embodiment of depression. Last but not least, Nel (Eleanor), she represents Acceptance, she came to terms with the bent neck lady, her own visage of her impending death, she forgave her family and understood that she loved them and they in turn loved her. When I learned about this it made the show even better. Hill House in the show is this monstrous and antagonistic entity that is devouring the family, but when you think about it at a deeper level it represents the collective thoughts and traumas one goes through in life. The passage of time and the echoes of people long gone, the difficulties we as humans face when approached by such struggles and grief. This show has amazing horror, but it also showcases how the genre isn't just about scares, it can really make you think about the psyche of the human mind and the feelings we express as people.

ElmSt Reactions

Amazing reaction lassies, even had me crying along with you both lol. This is problem the one of thebest written series of all time for me. Definitely do all the others but do them in order, although it doesnt really matter, its just nice to do, i loved them all

nic

The confetti speech is one of the best written dialogues of all time. Out of context, it may not seem like much, but every time I rewatch I sob listening to it. Such a well-written and beautiful show!

Iceman Radioactive formerly Joe (Moore)-An, a.k.a. No Meds Muscles Ripley, Stalwart Neelix Defender, currently adrift in space

I love Mike Flannigan, but with the exception of bly manor, the man doesnt know how to end a series. Trying to wrap up everything to have a Disney ending doesnt work if you've spent the entire series establishing how evil and horrible the house is. Its nice that the Dudleys are reunited, but just like Nell, Mom, and Dad, They will just be used by the house to ruin more lives. And the final line making the house seem like a good thing is just so tone deaf. Anyway, please watch Bly Manor next, it has a bunch of the same actors but is more of a haunted house love story than a horror story :)

Derek Willerton

Next up is Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of The House of Usher!

TOOKIE

Started this show because of you gals and easily became one of my top favorites. Thanks for the reaction ❤

Easily my fav TV show along with The Expanse. Thanks for reviewing this 🖤

Man... Hope to see some more shows by Flannagan with you. Such masterpieces. This show has so many lil details added, not just the ghosts in the background. F.e. the hint that Mr. Dudley might be the illegitimate child of William Hill (the floating guy). When Mr. Dudley tells the story of his mother giggling like a schoolgirl at night it's the first hint. Later when Poppy says that the sisters Guilt and Fear had haunted him (the reason why he bricked himself in), it can be assumed that he's had an affair. Considering Mr. Dudley had been born on the grounds as well that theory isn't too far-fetched. Also, the dogs the children heard during the night presumably belonged to William Hill's father, Jacob, who had built the house. The wikia says that Hazel, William's sister presumably shot the dogs after their father's passing, hence why the barking always ends so abruptly. Other theories like Hazel and Poppy fighting over the family's name, even killing each other's children over it, or that the family is still stuck in Hill House in the last scene are also very intriguing. I always wondered how all these other ghosts ended up there. The burnt corpse in the secret basement could be the wheelchair kid that communicated with its parents by banging on the walls (what Sherly and Theo heard during the night). Hazel was in the sickbed, obviously. But the clockmaker f.e., how did he end up there? :D And the last theory with the family still being there: The red room always has a window or overall rectangular shape in the back. Looking at the last show of the family... Buuuut just theories. What's next? Bly Manor? Midnight Mass? Usher? e.e

It’s very likely that Poppy and her husband weren’t mad so much as psychically sensitive/mediums the way Liv is - hence they’re some of the more powerful ghosts the house took. Liv was probably stronger than Poppy, hence Poppy deferring to Liv and Liv appearing as the face of the house. It seems as though the house was keen to feed on anyone who had sensitivity.
