Every video has excess footage, but breaking down Steph Curry's off ball activity produced so many clips that I wanted to share the raw footage (with a few notes).

While this video didn't get into off-ball value from rebounding or rim finishing, it did dive into the world of off-ball counters. In other words, if a scorer's goal is to create open, high-percentage shots, off-ball movement accomplishes that by running and cutting. Much like an NFL wide receiver running a route or shaking a cornerback to find an opening.

And that produces a world of non-dribbling techniques and counters. Curry has the most of any player like this I've ever seen, and here is my off-hand list that you can see throughout the notes in the footage:

  • standard routes/cuts off screens (off-ball version of a crossover)
  • walks players into screens
  • elite hand fighting for separation
  • will seal-then-cut with inside position
  • rope-a-dope setup (off-ball version of a hesitation)
  • relocation / 2nd move
  • 360 degree movement/backpedal (off-ball stepback)
  • uses opponent as a screen

Are you planning on re-writing his GOAT profile the next time you update it?

Hey Ben. I had a question on your stat "ScoreVal" but you turned off comments on that post. Do you mind if I ask my question here?
