1. Pencils!

2. Inking!

3. Color blocking!

4. Form shading! I used two layers for the form shading so that I could make the one inside the box much darker and deeper than the outside, to create a more cramped feel.

5. Backlight! Two layers for backlight so that the objects inside the box could get a different color from the outside, to make it feel more separated.

6. Cast shadows!

7. Highlights!

8. Plastic cover effect! I made a transparent white fill to cover the whole opening, above the linework but careful not to cover the linework for the edge of the opening itself. Then I made another layer with some transparent white ovals for the places where dolly is touching the cover. Then one more transparent white layer for some big rectangular shine streaks.

9. Colored linework! I colored the characters and everything they are wearing but not the box itself because I wanted it to stay very solid-looking.

10. Final effects! Then it's just the final details. Adding the shading for the simple objects in the backdrop. Brushing on some confetti effects. Adding a gradient and texture to the background to make it more interesting. And painting in the eyelashes (I usually do this last.)

Doll plus box equals total amazement on my end :D besides poodles this is my most favorite scenario ever :) I simply LOVE your twist on it though making sure that he is definitely most uncomfortable in his little prison :) I love the thought of whoever trapped him in there smiling wickedly as they seal him tightly within his box. GAH my imagination in going crazy as usual :) your pics just leave so many incredible possibilities :) On an artistic note though I love the confetti in the background and the way you drew the wrapping paper tearing away is also really incredible :) I sincerely hope there's plenty of outfits for dolly in the other presents :) :) :)
