I really enjoy the fact that you two are very honest about what you like and dislike; you're not trying to suck up the fanbase. With that being said, I really hope the "goofy" designs aren't going to be this much of a deterrent when you're hundreds of episodes deep. One Piece will always have a mix of serious designs and goofy designs. It really helps if you get in the mindset that not every character has to be a stereotypical pretty/generic anime character. I hope you can appreciate just how vast and varied the different characters in OP are. Sure, characters like that fishman with the big lips and Gaimon (afro guy in the chest) are weird, but they're also memorable, IMO. As you can see from Baratie, One Piece can be silly one moment, and very serious the next.
