 In the 30s the multiplane camera was created to give depth to cartoons. Instead to filming a plain drawing against a still background, the multiplane camera offers a layout divided into different layers with the possibility to  individually moving them. And also move the camera in or out.

In the digital era the 2d animation software translated the multiplane camera goods are easily done by using planes in different layers. By moving or scaling the planes at different speeds progressively you can achieve nice depth effects. In digital animation and video-games this multiplane depth effect is know as parallax.
