The Story of A Certain Soldier (2)

"Tch, don't let those monsters get close!"

It's the first night where about 10 hours have passed since the war with the Country Of Demise started. It's a time when the sun has set, and the moon is shining in the sky. At a time when there are probably people who are already sleeping under normal circumstances, we're still continuing the first battle.

The combined troops' vanguards which had been fighting continuously as if it was an ordinary war, are gradually being overwhelmed by the attacks of the monsters that neither diminish nor rest.

It's still okay if that's all there is to it, but I guess it's as expected of those who are bringing along dead spirit monsters, it looks like there are Liches mixed in amongst them, and when the soldiers on our side die, they resurrect as zombies after a while. Furthermore, matching their capabilities when they were alive.

We initially had a difference in numbers and thought we could defeat the Country Of Demise easily, but night descended with us standing in the same position as when the war began.

Substituting the frontlines that had been fighting continuously since the start and continue enduring despite the change in fighting style. We ended up getting stuck with having to go out to the front as well.

Furthermore, the troublesome thing is, the monsters move better at night. Because of that, not just the army we're in, the situation at the other places had turned quite bloody tough as well.

"Captain! A new one is here!!"

Directing my eyes in the direction where one of the squad's people pointed, there was a monster with numerous layers of coagulated human bodies over there. It's a 3 to 4 meters gigantic body, and it punches and sends the soldiers standing on the frontlines flying with strength corresponding to that gigantic body.

"It's no different from a humongous monster! Do it as always!"

The unit's soldiers start moving respectively at my voice and start fighting the monster of coagulated corpses. It's a really troublesome enemy, you know. It's because it comes attacking as long as you don't destroy its head, and even if you destroy it, you'll end up turning that corpse into a part of the monster's body.

"Captain, what are we gonna do? It doesn't feel like they're going to retreat at all, you know?"

Vice-Captain Maeg who was giving orders at a different place says something like that to me.

"Like there's anything we can do but to carry on enduring it. We're surrounded by monsters in front, and pseudo-ally soldiers at the left, right and back. If we retreat or something here, we're guaranteed to become war criminals. It's a pain, but there's no choice but to bear with it......"

"Captain, there is trouble!!"

As I was talking about something like that with Meig, a different subordinate I'd placed in the logistical support bloody showed up. Why the hell is he at a place like this.

"You, what are you doing leaving your station!"

"Sor-, sorry, Vice-Captain. But, there is trouble! The wounded amongst the other countries' soldiers who had fought in the morning started turning into zombies and going on a rampage!"

"......tch, did you not get rid of the corpses! You knew that'd happen after looking at the enemies, right!"

"Tha-, that is not it, Captain! Not corpses, living humans turned into zombies!"

Both Maeg and I ended up forgetting about the battlefield and freezing at the subordinate's words. What exactly is going on? It's said that zombies are corpses with an accumulation of Magic Power turning into monsters. Living humans, because they naturally deplete and replenish Magic Power repeatedly, they shouldn't turn into zombies.......

No, now's not the time to be thinking about something like that huh. Things that won't actually happen happened. It doesn't matter even if someone like me think about it.

"Are the ones that turned into zombies all of the soldiers that had participated in the battle?"

"No, since they had turned into zombies one after another inside the first-aid tent as far as we can see, it is likely the wounded that turned. It is just that, we cannot say for sure since not all the wounded turned"

"......in any case, make sure not to catch their attacks and get injured! You're gonna get turned into monsters alive!"

Maeg and the others are conveying my words to the other soldiers. After that, we continued fighting until dawn broke. Around when the sun started coming out, the zombies finally started retreating as well, and the first battle finally ended.

The soldiers who were made to fight the whole time continuously throughout the night were completely exhaustedly even though it was the first day, and they seemed to have a hard time even walking.

It looks like the other countries' soldiers who fell back to the rear and turned into zombies were all subjugated. Nobody imagined the living to turn into zombies, and it seems there are quite a number of casualties. Especially because the issue occurred inside the first-aid tent, I hear quite a number of healers got done in.

It was a more tedious battle than we thought, but because the Holy Kingdom still hasn't come out to the front, the other countries' soldiers are still positive. That made me quite uneasy.
