Max never could put into words what made him so uncomfortable about Pete. Every time that he came over to PJ’s house, the older man would try and talk to him—almost as if he was testing him. About what exactly? He never had a clue, but he could tell that his father-in-law wanted something out of him. Those eyes were always dissatisfied—always dismissive and unsatisfied. It’s why, whenever possible, he’d have PJ over his house instead. Of course, sometimes that wasn’t possible, and that resulted in Max trying to keep himself away from Pete as much as possible.

...

That’s why it was so weird when all of a sudden, Pete called him to have a talk late at night—the same night that PJ was busy covering for someone else in his job at the videogame center. Max insisted that maybe some other day would be a better time—the best time to be alone with his father-in-law being never, but he kept that to himself—but Pete told him that it wasn’t something he had a choice in.
