"In my research I made lists of monsters based on where they lived, how they originated in literature, film or myth. I categorized my ideas based on what made them monstrous, their size and appearance. I considered the different flavors of the definition of monster; large, a threatening force, one who deviates from normal or acceptable behavior, a being of strange or terrifying shape. But when I read an article on monsters by (then) PhD candidate Natalie Lawrence it changed my thinking on the subject. She said "'Monster' probably derives from the Latin, monstrare, meaning 'to demonstrate', and monere, 'to warn'. Monsters, in essence, are demonstrative. They reveal, portend, show and make evident, often uncomfortably so." So if monsters were intended to be a warning, there was only one place my mind would land, despite best efforts to take it elsewhere. I attempted to model it after the black and white etchings of monsters found in the margins of medieval books, but found my final result a bit busy compared to it's archaic, but simply lined counterparts."

“Parasitic Gastropods” - (still in progress)

Hand drawn in Procreate on IPad.

I originally did a rough sketched of this piece on paper with pencil, but I decided to transfer this on to my iPad using Procreate so I could play with more ideas for a future re-creation of this piece using another type of media.

This one is the earliest incarnation of Lava Lout! done on canvas, he's  usually drunk or being kicked out of pubs, barred from clubs with Bolder or Pebble shaped bouncers with dickie bows on. Clutching his can of Grog he relates to our Brits more well known abroad as Lager Louts!.

He's never been shown and the sort of comic strip that he then went onto has never seen it past the odd peep from the store cupboard, still, although a little more ape than volcano looking in the beginning I think you get the idea.

this is spikehead the goo man. goo men are some of my favorite things to make. they’re a breed of creature that exists in a state of constant change. as they grow they shed all of their skin, blood and organs until they are reborn from the pile of discarded goo. i imagine the goo men are happy, that they are always excited for their next rebirth, anxious to uncover their new form.

And finally, I shared my Twilight Zone kid with you already. But I wanted to share this failed monster painting that I abandoned as a reminder that it's okay to not come up with something amazing. It's okay to fail. Some times these prompts yield fantastic results and open something up. Sometimes they don't.

Happy May 14th Everyone

I got out of Jury duty today.

Yesterday we had to stand up one at a time and introduce ourselves to the judge, lawyers, plaintiffs and 30 other potential jurors.

We had to say our names, what we did for work, marital status, child status and whether we've ever served on a jury.

I said "artist" for occupation. I was the only artist. I was also the only one with an occupation that the judge wanted to hear more about.

So my nightmares where I'm standing in a courtroom having to to explain my art to a judge and jury came true.

All I could muster up was "I paint really weird stuff and sometimes I do portraits for money."

In the words of Ben Stiller in Dodgeball, I felt like a skid mark on the underpants of society.

Today when I got dismissed, I told the first person I saw "Got out of that one." Her face immediately told me how crazy that is to say to someone in a court house.

Have Fun

Goodnight Sweeties
