There’s been rumblings lately about Patreon’s new iOS announcement, and how that will affect patrons. Basically, Apple is forcing anyone who uses the Patreon app on their iOS device to use Apple’s own payment processing when subscribing, which will subsequently take 30% off the top of the subscription.

They are also making the payment come out on the day of subscription, not the 1st of the month for new subs.

What this means for patrons:

  • For subscribers? Not a thing. Nothing will change. All current subscribers will be billed on the first like always and the percentage will be the same

  • If you sub on the website or on an android smartphone, nothing!

  • If you sub on the Patreon iOS app starting November 2024, your charge will be higher, to cover Apple’s 30% additional fee.

If you are using Apple devices, you can still consume all content on the app itself without worry; you just need to subscribe on the website itself to bypass the extra fee.

Also, all new subscriptions will be on the new subscription model of billing on the day of subscription following November 2024. All past subs will still be billed on the 1st. This isn’t that big of a deal, but it still warrants mentioning.
