The next few days were filled with chaos as people tried to figure out exactly how to navigate the fact that they were in a new body. Mari agreed to let me spend a couple nights in her apartment. All of her clothes were there, that I would obviously need. She had swapped with Terry from sales, and she suspected some of her ex-husband’s clothes that he left behind would fit his body.

Not too many people were in a rush to leave the office. I don’t think people wanted to be alone in someone else’s body. I found it even more awkward to be alone with Mari. We walked to her apartment, which was only a few blocks from the office. And she pulled out some leftovers from her fridge for us to eat, thinking most restaurants and stores wouldn’t be open. I never used to like the taste of cold noodles, but they were now strangely delicious -- one of the odd things about having someone else’s tastebuds, I suppose.

We ate in silence for a while before Mari turned on the TV. It was a bunch of news reports about the swapping, so we got sick of that pretty quickly and switched to Netflix instead.

She gave me a nightgown to wear and offered me the bed while she took the couch in the living room. Trying to fall asleep in someone else’s body had to be the most difficult thing ever. It was when I became most aware of my new body. Every breath made me aware of a new sensation. Even when I stood up, paced around, and tried to get my mind off it, it made it worse. And I felt trapped in the room knowing Mari was sleeping (or being equally restless) just outside the door.
