Gavin was at a loss about what to do about the fact that his girlfriend inside the cat’s body was missing. But he wondered if his invention might help. If he fixed it properly, maybe he could read the cat’s mind that was in his girlfriend’s body; he’d at least know exactly what it was doing or how it got in the way when he first tested it earlier. He figured the worst possibility was that he’d swap into his girlfriend’s body, and the cat would be stuck in his body.

He was very wrong.

After activating his device a second time, he did indeed end up swapping into his girlfriend’s body; but his own body just seemed to disappear! He figured this was why he couldn’t find the cat’s body. But now he was not only stuck in his girlfriend’s body, but he didn’t have a body to return to -- nor did he know if his girlfriend’s consciousness existed anywhere in any form. He knew he should feel guilty or sad, but it was also difficult for him to truly feel the loss either. He wondered if being inside her body meant that he could feel some sort of piece of her that was still inside. Maybe there was a way he could separate it and get himself apart from it and out?
