So I woke up this morning to this fun email:

---

Hey there,

I'm Ezra on the Trust & Safety team here at Patreon. I'm writing to inform you that your account is in violation of our Community Guidelines.

Any content that can be viewed publicly by anyone on the site cannot contain nudity or adult content, so I ask that you update all public spaces such as your banner, profile image, overview, reward tiers, and public posts to reflect this.

Additionally, Patreon does not allow pornography, which is defined in our guidelines as real people engaged in sexual acts such as intercourse or masturbation. This definition includes vagina play, signs of arousal, breast stimulation, or play with sex toys and the like.

Pornographic content cannot be funded by or linked to or from your creator page, nor can it be offered as a reward to patrons through messaging or links.

We need you to review your page and remove any pornographic material.

Let me know once you've made this change, and I'll be happy to take another look at your page.

If you have any questions in the meantime, don't hesitate to email me. I'm here to help.

All the best,
Ezra

I'm not sure what nudity I'm showing on my home page. It could be my profile and tier icons, but cleavage is pretty tame as far as nudity goes. Maybe it's as simple as removing the link to my DeviantArt, which does contain nudity.

As far as pornography, they're almost certainly referring to my captions. If that's the case I'll have no choice but to remove them and the Shirt Stretcher tier, so grab what you can now.

I've emailed them back asking for clarification and I'll keep you all updated.

Ugh. Content Police telling you that you did A Bad Thing, but not actually telling you what The Bad Thing is. It's pretty pathetic any time I see it. If it continues, you just let me know what your patreon alternative is and I'll support you there.

This is bullshit man

Scott Mcdowell

Is there a way to put the images on the other side of the link essentially? Like a blurred thumbnail, click on that and it takes you to the actual image? Similar to your stories when it says ‘read more’. Unfortunately I’m assuming that means having to pull everything prior

beengineer

Nope, they don't allow links to external explicit images either, regardless of where it's hosted. They're taking their time responding.

Scott Mcdowell

Perhaps this means non-nude caption pics unfortunately

beengineer

There's a lack of content like that that would work for what I need for captions. I may just pivot to writing mini 1 page stories to replace them

Scott Mcdowell

I understand. I’m sure it’s not easy as a content creator. I’m sorry. I love your work

Anonymous

Do you think non models can have onlyfans pages. They will never restrict nudity and it's essentially the same idea subscription to posts.

beengineer

Interesting thought! It would be worth looking into, but I'm thinking they're not very well suited for literature-based content. I've never used them though.

That New Shoe Smell

I hope this doesn't apply to the artwork too, because not only would that fucking suck even more, but that leaves pretty much everyone else I support on Patreon vulnerable to this attack as well. I sincerely hope that this gets cleared up in a way that benefits all of us and especially you.

beengineer

I'm pretty certain it doesn't apply to the art. If they banned drawn porn, Patreon would go under overnight. It's just actual porn they don't like.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this, your content is great. Patreon and the financiers and their ilk keep trying to play the thought police because the boomer are still trying to pretend they think porn is bad. Patreon is going to kill itself or get sold to another company sooner or later. There was another content creator I follow who just went to subscribestar. You could try that. I agree with the OnlyFans suggestion though, not because I've explored their service but because they are probably the only game in town that actually supports lewd content instead of just tolerating it. Aside- And I'm not in the legal field but, the whole content police thing is probably a result of the ongoing "publisher" vs "platform" 1st ammendment debate metastasizing. The liability laws for internet entities in the US are archaic and it's all going to the courts eventually. Be ready to call your representative when it does.

beengineer

The problem with Subscribestar is that I don't feel like I can trust it to be around in 5 years. Especially not without Paypal allowing them to use its payment platform. Patreon does a lot of policing, but at least captions are a very small part of my content and can be replaced by some other written form. For all my other content, I'm totally safe so long as my stories involve adults and the art doesn't involve kids or people who are child-like. I am curious to see what kind of platform only fans could offer for someone like me.

beengineer

I understand what you're saying. Subscribestar is has every that I would need to maintain this content, but there are people who depend on the income this generates. For one of our artists, part of this accounts for their entire income. I know it sucks that one company has so much say in what is "acceptable" content, but Paypal is generally a good indicator of trust. Personally, if I was looking to support creators, I wouldn't even consider using a site that only took my credit card number or bank info as a means of payment. Subscribestar may have other forms, but credit card was the only method they mentioned in their FAQ. It should go without saying that my main concern with switching platforms is losing a significant number of supporters.

Fr0g

You've made good points. It's an unfortunate position to be in. Again, you have my sympathy and I wish you luck in figuring it all out.

beengineer

Thank you very much. And thanks for your support as well!

What if you did both Patreon & an alternative such as Subscribestar? Not an ideal situation by any means, but this way you could continue to create the content YOU want, and still be able to publish the majority of it on Patreon.

SpartacusDA

I don't know if their restrictions are any better but I've recently started following erotica writers on ko-fi.
