This is another piece of advice that I never see commonly talked about. Especially in a world where "self training" is becoming more common in a broad range of technical skills, I think the flat advice of "go get a degree and figure it out from there" is getting less and less applicable. 

Never before have we had so much access to so much job-related data. Things change quickly in the field, but this "work your way back" approach really makes sense to me as a way to try and navigate the rough waters of career planning.

And it's important to remember that women often don't even apply for positions unless they meet 100% of the requirements. Men do and with a much smaller percentage of matching skills. Reach jobs are okay to apply for!
