Two more pages on the "worker safety issue". To be clear, this last factory we visited wasn't one of our direct suppliers, but was the supplier of one of our clients that we were checking out as a favour. We had to have a conversation about whether we would interfere.

Not only did the contract make the livelihoods of these people in China possible, it made the livelihood of our client - a solo entrepreneur - possible. The product was one that was undeniably improving lives. It's one that I see around town occasionally and every time I do I get a sharp pang of this "torn" feeling.

It makes the world feel very small.

I don't think there are any easy answers to this one, beyond buying only what you need and being careful about what companies you're supporting. Every "savings" has a cost.

The inability or unwillingness to get ~US$12 welding goggles … seems beyond the pale. Awkward…

I'm assuming that the two panels in the first page are from the same manufacturer, in which case, they lie to their customers. This is the sort of thing that casts suspicion on all Chinese manufacturers. I've heard other stories where they make the initial runs of a product to spec and then cheapen them sometime later. Or someone swiping the designs for a product and manufacturing it at another facility under a different name (happened to a kickstarter that still hasn't shipped). Makes one wonder if there are any honest ones over there (I'm sure there are but finding them likely isn't easy). Hope you got lucky with your company's choice.

Hm, no that wasn't the implication at all. These are two completely separate factories, and I was trying to illustrate the contrast. I didn't find any evidence at all of lying. It's more a matter of knowing the right questions to ask. From what I understand the business relationship is valued very highly. Everyone who had high safety standards would go above and beyond to demonstrate this because they understand how important it is for maintaining the relationships. The situations you're describing do happen, but once again... it's based on price. You would find that behaviour in lower-cost suppliers, because the savings have to come from somewhere.
