More Shenzhen Fast! Today we're starting our section on PCB Assembly! This is probably what most people think about when they think about "electronics". The actual pieces on the board that do all of the fancy magic that makes electronics so special :).

The first page features Henk at Trouble Maker – From idea to product with lightning speed, another makerspace we were able to visit in Shenzhen. It was situated directly above HQB, so imagine that you're working on a prototype and you can just walk downstairs and have a component supermall right there! You can talk to a supplier and be back in time for lunch. From where I design parts in Canada, the concept is still a little bewildering...

The electronics display case in the first panel was another one of those things where it was overwhelming in real life and I feel like I wasn't able to do it justice in 2D.

I actually had to draw parts of that component case twice... because I changed the composition of this page and big pieces were missing... *sigh*.... anyway I'm glad it's behind me :)

I'd really like to get to Shenzhen one day. We've had a couple of rounds of product made there, plus I'd like to meet Naomi Wu! The nearest I've been in spirit to this is Akihabara in Tokyo many years ago...

It's very different from Akihabara... the best way I can describe it is that Akihabara is more consumer-oriented. Some of the overlap is that Shenzhen also has gigantic malls of consumer-oriented things (phones, cameras, etc), and Akihabara also has components... but when I visited Akihabara it seemed very hobby oriented. Shenzhen is all about work. The people in HQB can sell you one camera, but they're most interested in selling you 1,000 cameras. Overall it's very worth visiting especially if you have a cause to visit factories there.

I was interested in the components side of Akihabara, not the finished goods, and this was MANY years ago, maybe 30Y, so even Shenzhen wasn't Shenzhen as now!
