Taraji asked to leave the show as she wanted to pursue other opportunities so the writers wrote this whole storyline for her exit.

I can't help but compare these lines from two different shows: Simmons: "Your time's up. Told you I'd end you." Warren: "You think you can just do that to me? That I'd let you get away with it? Think again." This ending made me see red, too. I hate Simmons about as much as I hate Warren.

This was a hard one to watch. I remember when I saw it the first time and I just felt stunned. I get that sometimes with shows it's unrealistic that everyone is magically fine no matter who they go up against but I was totally not prepared for her to die. I do like how the relationships are evolving with the addition of Shaw and Root.

RIP Carter. I must say that I'm not that good at spotting the setup for a character death. I think you have a better eye for it, Shan. How strongly did your alarms go off during the episode? On original watch, even if I couldn't put my finger on it, I figured something was up when I saw the kiss between John and Carter. When she was shot at the end of the episode, it all made sense. Carter was never my favorite character, so I was not very upset about her exit. What I found really egregious though was that kiss, which implied some romantic feelings between John and Carter that came totally out of the blue and out of character. As far as I could tell, its only purpose was to raise the stakes leading up to Carter's death, and potentially giving John something more to pine about in the future (the poor guy has enough to pine about!). A cheap trick that blemishes what is an otherwise great episode, neatly wrapping up the HR story line. I think I noted in an earlier comment that I didn't find the implied feelings that Carter had for Beecher very convincing either. Perhaps the writers didn't quite know what to do with her character already since the previous season. I think that, from the whole team, she had the least motivation to work with The Machine, other than her loyalty to John. So Taraji P. Henson's desire to transition to a movie career might have been a stroke of good luck. BTW, in this episode we saw several extreme tests of loyalty to... "doing the right thing." Fusco almost lost his son, by not giving up Carter's hard won incriminating info on HR. Shaw had to choose between helping John and Fusco, and then between Fusco and his son. Finch kept Root's cage locked, risking his own life to help John alone. And of course, John drawing the bad guys away from Carter. I might argue with what the "right thing" would have been in each of these cases, but the characters did what seemed right to them at the time. I think these were important character building moments.

Yeah, I wasn't convinced of the sudden romance for stakes between reese and carter, but I do think that they had a close enough relationship that I can treat character reactions in the show probably the same, mostly. I genuinely thought they might kill off a chunk of the cast when I first watched it, and leave Root, Finch, & Shaw to start over, they were waving the death flags for all 3 of carter, reese, and fusco, so I was surprised when 2 of them got out of it. Good episode
