Sam Shaw works for the government which tracks down the relevant numbers from the machine so terrorist acts, or other risks to America (basically what the machine was built for) while Reese and Harold do the irrelevant numbers. Sam and her partner were deemed irrelevant by the machine hence why they got her number.

POI writers do a great job of writing nuanced bad ass women! First Carter, then Root and now Shaw!

A friend of mine recommended this show 14 years ago, and now I watch it every week with you. It's hard to wait for Mondays

Shaw and Cole were kinda like Reese and Finch for the relevant side, but Cole started to ask questions about where the numbers come from so the ISA was going to kill them both, triggering the machine to get their numbers. Shaw and Cole had blue boxes for being agents of Northern Lights the way Reese and Finch have yellow for The Machine. I love the episode structure, Shaw, and the fact we have absolutely no context to how Leon was brought in to help.

This show will mess with the intro sometimes as part of the story telling, I believe this is the first episode they do it. Also welcome Ms Shaw, my favorite POI character.

mine toooo, been looking forward to this episode

2023-07-20 20:07:04 Hi, Shan. Hope you were feeling well enough during the last recording! This episode is cut like a diamond: sharp, hard and dense. Because has almost no loose pieces, it's not surprising that some of the details are difficult to grab the first time around. Though the writers made sure to repeat the key clues several times. If you catch on the first time, you feel clever. If catch on eventually, you feel happy that you haven't lost the thread. Very well done! I couldn't quite tell from your reaction, when did you catch on that we were getting a peek at the covert counter-terrorism operations based on the "relevant" threats supplied by The Machine? In principle, the first clues came right at the interrupted intro sequence, with the words RELEVANT and IRRELEVANT flashing on the screen at different times. Eventually, it becomes obvious, especially when you recognize the parallel between the Shaw/Cole and John/Finch duos. The Shaw/Cole case is a replay of the earlier "Acquino incident", where a covert ops team (Shaw herself, in that case) is used to eliminate someone who knew too much or was asking too many questions about the intelligence provided by The Machine (codenamed The Northern Lights here). The flashback date to Acquino is 2011, which I think lines up just before John and Finch started working together, meaning that they wouldn't have been able to react it as an irrelevant number. Here we saw Shaw/Cole come up as irrelevant numbers. If the team tasked to take out Shaw had been successful, their own numbers might have come up as "irrelevant" in the future. What a *ahem* wonderful cycle of life envisioned by US intelligence (in this show)!

2023-07-21 08:45:09 Hi, Shan - this is my first comment on your video - there will be absolutely NO spoilers from me, NO worries - really did enjoy watching this, and finally all caught up with you, on your reactions to this show, too...as I, recently and finally, blasted through all 100 of your reactions to "The 100" - all in 12 days - from July 5th to early morning of July 17th, and - that was a blast (and, by the way - that show goes down way better, if you "gulp" all seven seasons in a mere 12 days... :-) ... :-) ... :-) ... ). Could only hope, that "Person of Interest" show will remain your regular show, on here, too (all the way until the final episode). And, since I only joined your Patreon in June, could only guess that most of important stuff is decided in the sold-out tier, but - that's all good, will vote on feedback polls, or any other polls - as I really enjoy your reactions - and they ARE a pleasure to watch - wish all the best (and, while blasting through The 100, I sent you some direct messages, regarding The 100's open lore, as your reactions were already completed, by then, but - not sure, if you even read those, and, it was just the same feedback from me as here) - looking forward to your future reactions!!!
