Bushmaster has a vendetta against Mariah. We don't know the full story yet but we know it was enough to make him want to kill her at all costs.

Patrick - Excelsior

Bushmaster's father, Quincy McIver, was partnered with Mariah Stokes’ parents, Bugsy Stoke and Mama Mabel, in crime. Quincy supplies illegal rum (Bushmaster Rum) from Jamaica to sell in New York, especially in the Stokes family bar, Harlem Paradise. The other crime gangs (the Italian and Irish Mafia, Politicians and crooked cops) want to take over the rum business but Quincy will not sell it. So, they made a deal with the Stokes, if Bugsy betrays Quincy and kills him, the mob takes the rum business and Stokes keep the bar in Harlem and gets even more money dealing with them. So, Bugsy Stokes betrays Quincy, and kills him, but before dying Quincy shoots back. Bugsy gets shot in stomach and both men die, Bugsy 5 months later from an infected belly wound. The gangs go after the young Bushmaster boy, John McIver and his mother so that they can't cause problems in future. They throw a Maltov cocktail (petrol in a Bushmaster Rum bottle with a burning rag on it) through the window of their house, young John gets away but his mom dies in the fire. This is why Bushmaster, John McIver, wants revenge on the Stokes family and why he wanted to burn the last remaining member of the Stokes family, Mariah, alive. So she would suffer like his mother. This is why he gets angry throughout the show when people call Mariah, Mariah Dilliard (her married name). He wants revenge on the Stokes so he always emphasizes that’s her name. Its hard to get this story. The Jamaican accent in strong. When I first watched it I had to have the subtitles on.
