I remember that I was shocked by the twist. Though the biggest part of the shock was realizing that we won't get to explore the character of Alicia in the show (outside of flashbacks, perhaps). They had built her up enough throughout the season to make me look forward to it. But the reveal of Root was more than worth it. Ironically, I got some Illyria vibes from that moment, if you can see the parallel. Shan, when you start the next season, I'd like to hear what you think is the main thing that this show is about (you know, like Buffy was about the problems of high school becoming real monsters), from all the information that you have so far. If you get far enough into the show, I'm sure it'd be interesting to compare with your on-camera opinion from earlier on. In one of the Comic-Con panels Jonathan Nolan gave a very interesting answer to that question, which contrasted how he was originally pitching it and how he was thinking about it himself.

LETS GO!!!! Finally. I get that knowing she is Root before you got into it was kind of disappointing, since you didnt get that shock factor. But her character is such an adventure going forward, you'll get over that disappointment in no time.

I'll be honest, the only reason I ever started this show was that I knew Amy Acker was in it, and there were times during early S1 where I would be like, "Damn when is she gonna show up?" But the rest of the characters won me over long before she arrived. That said, S1->S2 is when the show starts to evolve from a relatively standard procedural spy thriller with an interesting premise...into something completely different, and what really makes this show unique.

Oddly I didn't really remember this establishing episode. There is a much later episode that is seared in my brain. But that would be spoilers. A great character.

I personally was hooked on this show from episode 4. I know my dad would love this show but like you, he watched the first couple of episodes and didn't think it was his thing. Unlike you, he doesn't have someone subscribe to force him to continue (thanks El for that, you have the patience of a saint waiting 2 years for 1 season). I'm glad you now got past the rocky start and like the show. As everyone says it genuinely does get better and Amy Acker's intro plays a large role in that transformation. As for the twist, I didn't see it coming at all so it was a huge jump scare when Alicia gets shot and its because she's actually Root!

I was sort of in the same boat as you because I started watching later on so I already knew who Amy was playing so when I watched from the beginning of the catch up, I wasn’t able to be surprised. I agree with another poster above that the Root character has such an amazing character arc that it makes up for whatever disappointment being spoiled on this may have.

I actually also knew Amy Acker was in the show and was Root, which was one of the reasons I started watching. But the reveal still caught me off guard. I think when she first showed up I just assumed Root was an alias or something she took on later, or I was mistaken. So the scene at the car definitely shocked me.

I hope Shan doesn't read these comments. You guys are speaking way too much about a character's future growth. You'd think you'd all know by now about "expectation spoilers." It doesn't matter that she knew Amy Acker was on the show and that she played a character name Root. That's all she knows. She asked for your reaction to this reveal. Not to how you feel about her future growth.

As I watched this as each episode was released and I have a massive crush on Amy Acker, I was truly surprised that Amy was Root

I watched this episode when it first aired and was pleasantly surprised by AA showing up. At first I thought she was just a guest star, the most recent POI-of-the-week, but then realized the character's last name was Turing. You don't have a character with that name in a story about artificial intelligence without it having a deeper meaning. I wasn't exactly sure what her role would be, so I was surprised by the deception, but I knew there was more to the character than just another POI.
