General Grievous (the big droid General) could not die here because he is in the movie Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which takes place after this. This show came out as a prequel to that movie. In most Sci-Fi, tractor beams are a visible effect. In Star Wars they are invisible.

Tractor beams worked a bit differently in old Star Wars expanded universe, but we saw them as early as ANH. The range is pretty impressive, but the no beam always looked weird to me.
