I enjoyed this series as much on my first rewatch as I did when it aired. The acting was amazing and I loved the storytelling. I wouldn't have minded more and dealing with her mental health issues, but it might have made the show less good. So, I'm happy with what we got in the end.

To be clear, Beth is not the world champion. She has laid her personal demons to rest and now is playing to her full potential, which is quite high considering she was defeating champions in an impaired state. The World Championship won't happen until the following year which Beth is ready for. Still, there's a slight suggestion she might extend her stay in Russia. But, since this the end of the novel, we'll never know.

Glad you ended up liking this show, and thank you Jeremy for picking this one! While there was a lot of chess, I think the rest of the story stands on its own and holds the show up nicely. It was a pleasant surprise when I started watching it the first time, had no idea what Iwas getting into. It re-triggered my love of chess and have been playing a lot ever since. You comented on the weird pieces in the last game there. I agree, it's weird to have the opposite color highlights on your king and queen. This is unique as far as I know to the chess sets used by Soviet chess clubs of the era. This set of pieces was often used at the high level tournaments, so the show was very accurate to use them.
