Haha i don't think they are specifically making him the Carl character from Up. There are just some similarities with the situation. I don't think the house is going to fly or he's going to meet a kid and a dog and go on adventures, lol.

Even if it all seemed way too good to be true, almost to a comedic degree, given the roller coaster of things that's happened, the flashback stuff was really sweet. And yes, the Up parallels certainly abound. Right down to the music. Even without the bird, dogs and balloons, the inspiration is undeniable.

I really like the little touch of the big/small thing with Alice. The pills make her feel "small" like the Wonderland cookies. And without them, she feels "big" and powerful, like when she ate the mushroom. It's all very metaphorical, but in quite a nuanced way.

Regina’s curse name I believe is meant to be an alternate spelling of “Rani,” which is the Hindi word/name for “queen.” Or it could be a diminutive of “Veronica,” which means “bringing victory,” a nod to her being a hero now. Pretty clever. 5. The Seattle Underground is actually a real thing. The location is different (in-show it’s beneath the fictional Hyperion Heights neighborhood whereas IRL it’s beneath the Pioneer Square neighborhood), but otherwise it’s legit. 11. WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE. I’ve always hated the Rumbelle relationship, and the fact that after all the shit Rumple pulled she stayed with him … ugh. So gross.
