Yeah, I think they wanted to have an episode as early as possible to prove that Sam was as badass as Jack or Teal'c. I mean there was very few women in the military on tv and even then they were usually the shallow love interest or the sex object or snarky and super agressive or the damsel in distress. All of them with sexy/revealing clothes. Not only is Sam one of the first but she's also none of that, she's pretty, caring, badass, brilliant and most of all respected. And even in real life, in the 90s, women in military rarely made it above the rank of like lieutenant or something. Her skills as a soldier/warrior are never called out after this. It's literally an episode and done and just moving on. Which I really appreciate. Nowadays, you have several episodes a season every season to prove that the women are powerful and strong. I don't like that personally, it feels very forced most of the time. And credit where it's due, a lot of it is thanks to the actress, Amanda Tapping who just told the writers to write her like they would the men. The biggest example is that "reproductive organs on the inside and not the outside" line. She told them to stop it, cause no women would talk like that. And at the beginning of the production, they wanted to put her in feminine, sexy clothes and she put her foot down and told them to dress her like the other men. I love her so much, she's an icon.

Also fun fact, Amanda is considered "royalty" in the sci-fi genre and as been dubbed the "Grand Empress of Sci-Fi".

It's a good thing SG-1 doesn't have a Prime Directive or anything like that! Kind of interesting that they can just go and meddle. Samantha is awesome, loved that she kicked that dumb warlord's ass. I'm curious to see what other ancient Earth civilizations are out there through other gates.

Interesting. The writer of this episode also wrote what many fans consider to be among the worst episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation. Both follow very similar themes and events, but here its more effective than the ST effort. Still, Stargate will soon find its own footing and character beyond this style of story.

Well put! Sometimes fans are a bit too eager to put this episode down without considering the context of the time.

I imagine what Jack had to write requesting another side arm: "I require replacement side arm, since previous one was used to purchase Captain Carter from a local chief."

Personally, I don't mind this episode. It's not a particularly good one but it's not the worst one, despite it's reputation. (It's literally the worst rated on imdb) I find others worst than this one, Hathor and Talion to only name a couple. Again personal opinion tho.

Is the head guy "Checkov" from Star Trek?
