I find the ending of the blackout storyline disappointing. As you mentioned they could have done a lot regarding the mother. To really give the audience somewhat of an understanding of what a mental illness can do to someone. The mental illness could have been something of a continuous struggle for Emily until she finds her mother, who then gives her handles on how she can control the disease to some extent. It would have been interesting to see the outcomes and consequences of that struggle. But instead, they resolved it by having Aiden (yuck) partly drown Emily until some memory comes back which then clears up everything that happened. And because of that, the entire blackout storyline feels utterly meaningless, similar to the one-episode-amnesia. In the end not much if anything changed at all. Perhaps the writers didn't have enough material to properly fill this season. So they decided let's do some memory storylines, introduce characters that leave a couple of episodes later, etc. Making the show move further away from Revenge and more and more towards Drama. The show is called Revenge so show me more revenge (like season 1). Otherwise the main plot fades too much into the background, which can make a show quite boring to watch.

Your last paragraph is pretty much why I gave up on the show soon after the first season. Looks like I'm not missing much still.
