Snyder wanted to have MM (as well as Hal and John) but WB didn't let him. He is one of the few things he added when WB allowed him the 4 hours movie. He doesn't really bring anything to the story but he wanted to have him here so he kind of took the opportunity to do it. I feel like Whedon added many unnecessary scenes and got rid of those he needed to make the story make sense and flow smoother. The scene with Victor explaining the boxes and his origins, transitioning to bringing back Clark was one of those needed scenes imo, instead of his stupid reshoot of it.

to be clear the MM scene in this part was always in the movie or at least it was previously shot. if this was a theatrical cut I feel it would be an easy scene to cut because it doesn't add anything. the other scene with him was part of the reshoots he did

Martian Manhunter was supposed to be in the movie all along. It was in the original script written in 2016, and storyboards were drawn up at the time. However, the Martha Kent beginning transition into MM was filmed in 2016 and the part with Gen. Swanwick ("Boyd" from Dollhouse) was filmed in Aug. 2020. It was always intended to be filmed, but Snyder didn't get the chance to film it back then.

Some say that Martha being MM in that scene undercuts the emotion of it but I disagree. For all we know, MM could have read Martha’s mind to know all that information. And sure it being MM and not Martha it changes the scene from two people helping each other move forward from the loss of a loved one. However, what the scene is now is just as powerful. Now it’s a person trying to help another move forward from experience. It doesn’t remove any emotion as MM knows exactly what she is going through after having lost his family and planet

I think the MM reveal is where Shan changed from being a bit iffy about the whole thing to buying in. Great reaction.

MM has technically known Lois since Man of Steel. Also, if you notice in Man of Steel, when Superman was in that interrogation room, and broke his cuffs, walking towards the mirror, all the people on that other side backed away, except for one person. The General.... seems he was MM back then and not really afraid of him.
