I know what you mean, but in the end this outcome was inevitable. It is impossible for two people to share the same body. Once Neal surfaced and temporarily took over the body, the balance was disrupted, causing both personalities to fight for control. How the situation was subsequently handled could certainly have been better, you are absolutely right. Neal deserved a better and more beautiful ending. But the story had to go on, so there had to be a moment somewhere where it became known who Zelena really is. And since Rumpelstiltskin was the only one who knew that, they had to find a way to give him a clear mind again. Perhaps they did not have a lot of space for this in the script and it was therefore handled this way.

No Neil didn't sacrifice himself for Rumple he did it for Emma and Henry. The whole thing was to bring Rumple back so that he could get back to them but he didn't know bringing Rumple back would cost him his life.

when Neal and Emma exchanged “I love yous” it was over a year ago. Emma is now dealing with the loss of Walsh, we don’t really know much about their relationship but in this episode she expresses that she was in fact considering the marriage. She was in love, and she had forgotten about Neal (literally) so I don’t think a kiss would’ve made sense? like, i agreee, i would’ve loved to see a kiss but in Emma’s eyes it was over a year ago and she had a new boyfriend, almost fiancé. idk that’s sort of how i see it

I was also mad that they killed Neal when i saw it. Especially because I'm sure part of the reason they killed him was to make Captain Swan happen.
