For me, this episode is just kind of meh. When I saw this episode appear on the schedule I had to go look up the plot summary on IMDB just to remember which episode it was. It’s pretty forgettable, but there are a few things that I like about it and a few things that bother me. I like the M’gann plot. It’s nice to get a better understanding of who she is. Having her relate a story from her past that helps illustrate what kind of person she is, is a powerful thing. The healing that it enables for both her and J’onn is so important. Also, J’onn forgiving her is a huge step forward for his character and one that I totally support. I think that the actress does such a wonderful job in all her scenes, and while the Arrowverse version of M’gann is a fair bit different from her comic counterpart I do like the way she has been handled on the show. While they have no specific plot line this episode and not a lot of screen time I like whenever Alex and Maggie share scenes. At this point in the Arrowverse timeline they are my favorite romantic pairing. I dislike how the Livewire plot was resolved. The fact that Leslie does not murder the scientist and that Kara lets her go feels off to me. I get what the writers are doing but in the moment, after having just been kidnapped and tortured, Leslie decides to show restraint. After how freaked out Kara was by the whole situation she makes the decision to let Leslie off the hook. It’s so out of character for both characters and frankly feels like a cop out to me. I also dislike the budding Kara/Mon-El relationship. As someone who has been reading about these characters for decades I just hate the idea of putting these two together. I’m usually not the type of person who cares a whole lot about ships, whether characters are coupled up or not is not the reason why I’m watching this show or any show. Conversely, this means that I generally do not actively root against romantic pairings either. But in this case I find it hard not to. In my mind these two have no business being romantically linked. It’s weird and gross. I get that the actors have chemistry and for those who are not familiar with the comic versions of these characters this all seems fine. But for me it’s like watching cousins flirt with each other. No thanks.

Question: James’ storyline is pretty much the same as Laurel’s from Season 3 of Arrow. Just curious why you liked Laurel becoming a hero and not James?

I can't necessarily speak for Shan but she seems to feel the same way about James' character on the show that I do, so maybe this will make a bit of sense. Laurel made sense to be BC because it was part of comics lore. With James, the character is nothing like Jimmy Olsen. I'm not just talking about his skin color. Then they decide to make him into Guardian. It's just kind of out of the blue, like we need his character to do more, because he's not anyone on the show's love interest anymore but he's a main character. Having his run Catco didn't seem to be enough. They had to put him into the main storylines somehow, so this was their solution. It makes even less sense, considering he doesn't even have any powers. They were already making Mon-El into a crime fighter. Doing it with James was just wholly unnecessary.

The main problem, as I see it, with James on the show is that they took a character who is the ultimate sidekick and tried to turn him into a leading man. While there is precedence for Jimmy being a costumed hero in the comics, mostly way back in the Silver Age, the character’s heroism is usually not dependent on that. What makes Jimmy a hero is his trade, namely being the world’s best investigative photojournalist. This is a guy who is supposed to be curious, ambitious, courageous. A guy who will go anywhere and do anything because he knows that Superman has his back. The writers could have gone this way with the character on the show but instead they chose to portray him as the square-jawed, alpha male, heroic archetype. That’s not who Jimmy is or should be and it’s why the version presented on the show ultimately fails at being compelling at all.

not that it's not weird but in comic history there were several romantic/flirty moments between Supergirl and her own cousin Superman. So that doesn't surprise me.

She may not be exactly like the comic version of Laurel but she was still meant to become the Canary. James Olsen is like the complete opposite of Jimmy Olsen. In fact, they took another character's arc from the comics and made it James' when he became Guardian.

i found it a little weird and hypocritical of Kara in this one to come down on James so hard about fighting and being a vigilante and being just human when just a couple episodes ago in the crossover she was perfectly fine with Green Arrow, Speedy, Wild Dog, White Canary, Spartan, Heat Wave etc who are only humans fighting. She just fought along side all these human vigilantes and somehow James is different... how? I know she just met them and has known James longer and he from her earth. At least now looking back she should be able to say to herself well if they all could fight why not James. Also Mon-El is definately in the middle of growing as a person and hero but at the moment he is still new, doesn't listen or have the experience and is mostly doing for Kara so James was absolutely right though not seeing that growth in him. Also Kara was also right to call Mon-El out, she could handle herself and she said to protect the cops and he didn't and if James wasn't there to block it that cop would have been electrocuted and probably died so Kara and James were right to call him out on it.

@John I'm 100% behind that explanation. It goes back to some of the earlier comments that Jimmy should be Winn and "James" should have been offered another character. I understand they're trying to broaden the roles for people of colour, but a character is a character - they should be written true to that character! Mehcad Brooks is a good actor, but he's NOT Jimmy Olsen
