Omg! Arrow-verse is back people! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! 😊

This show is pretty good, but i do understand why people talk about the feminism in this show, i wished they could have balanced it better sometimes, but overall the show has potential.

while some of the writing in this show is a little bit cringey and cheesy, it's still enjoyable through most of season one and i'd really recommend trying to keep up with it!

if this is considered a spoiler i'll gladly delete this ofc, lmk if it is.

SHAN, please DON'T READ comments. This thread, which I thought was innocent and had no spoilers sparked discussions that included spoilers. *** I adored Supergirl. [Edit] It had just the right amount of cheese, camp, fun, drama, high stakes. I would watch it all the time with my daughters. I don't mind that it sometimes over-corrected on "girl power." It was fun, and I liked that my girls had a female superhero on tv. I started to get more uncomfortable as it got more preachy and started to turn into a show that felt like a political party/message wrapped in a show instead of a show dealing with political issues. But it was still fun, and I loved the characters and stories. I just noted the mood shift. [Edited Out] They were starting to loose interest at that point, and so I never recommended it again. That was the last episode we saw. It is sad because I am actually very liberal and progressive politically. Our value systems match up, but it even felt preachy for me. You should never have to tear someone else down to elevate someone else.

Nice. Some die-hard SuperMan fans don't really like this show, but I actually like it and have watched it ever since it first started on CBS in North America, before moving to The CW Network later.

Melissa Benoist makes a wonderful Supergirl. I wanted her to be more blonde but she won me over. Sometimes the show gets too preachy/political for my taste but Melissa keeps me watching.

So happy you started on Supergirl. It is my favorite of the Arrowverse shows but I'm an unapologetic Superman fanboy so anything even remotely related gets my love. I have a lot of opinions about Supergirl, some good some bad, and I can't wait to experience this show along side a new viewer. People in the comments above have already started in on what some people see as an overly preachy tone that the show can sometimes take. I agree that it does get a bit heavy handed at times but I like the fact that this show at least tries to have relevance to what is going on IRL and is not just more brain dead cape shit. Sure, sometimes it kind of fails at what it tries to do but at least it tries and I think that that is a good thing. And to help with your confusion a bit here is how Kryptonian naming conventions work. When a male child is born he is given a unique first name and takes the family name of his father as their surname, much like we do IRL. Female children are given a unique first name but take their father’s entire name as their surname, hence Kara Zor-El. When a woman marries she discards her father’s name but does not take her husband’s name. She is then know only by her first name but will often be referred to as being a member of her new house, example: Allura of house El. In the case of Kara’s mom she was originally Allura In-Ze but is now only Allura. In this episode when Vartox called her Allura Zor-El, that was a mistake of the writers.

This one took a while to grow on me. I feel like the show had a bit of a rocky start but definitely got better. Melissa is inspired casting. She's got everything I would expect to see in Kara.

I just like the fact that her adoptive parents used to play Supergirl and Superman... fun little nod to the past

Loves Bitca

"What if they find out who Superman is?" "But it's not safe for Superman either, but he still does it" But Superman is not her sister. Of course it's better tht she is Supergirl and helps people, but I can understand her being worried about her sister even though someone else who is not her sister does it, and wanting her to have a normal life and not risk her life. Imagine someone's son or brother signing up to go to war. Sure other brave soldiers do it, but they don't want their son or brother to die.

Shan will not be reading the comments for this episode due to spoilers and creating expectations. Can I please ask everyone to be mindful of what they comment.

Brent Justice

Season 2 is a lot better than Season 1, just make it through S1 please

Don't over think the Kryptonian names ive been trying to figure it out for years. Best I understand males get the last name of their father and females get their fathers full name as their last name.. doesnt make sense but Kara Zor-El does sound better then Kara El in my opinion so let it ride.

UTU49

"In this episode when Vartox called her Allura Zor-El, that was a mistake of the writers." Right, I see. Thanks. Allura's sister was married to an "El" which should have no bearing on her name or identity. There's no reason for a woman to take the name of her sister's husband. (Have I said anything that wasn't revealed in this episode?)

So Shan, apparently you recognized Helen Slater, who starred as Supergirl in the movie. And I suppose that you were also aware of Dean Cain, who played Superman to 'The Adventures of Lois and Clark'. I'm certain that it was intentional to have these two as Kara's adoptive parents. For me it was a nostalgic trip to the past. I can see clearly that it was different for you.

This show came on the back of Smallville, where we had ten years of Clark dancing around NOT being Superman. This show has the reverse problem. I would have loved the first season to be about Kara finding her feet in the costume, dealing with public recognition, but no we are into a formula straight away. Also, this feels like someone said, Flash works, do EXACTLY that. The base, the mechanism for villain of the week, sometimes feels like a reskin of another show. I think Melissa is a fantastic Supergirl, but the show is lacking IMO.

Jarrod Wild

The show does have a rough start out of the gate. Also it was on CBS for season 1, and there was network pressure as there always is when you are going to spend millions per episode. Once the show found its footing, it got a lot better (the move to CW was the best thing that could have happened). ABC did the same thing with Lois & Clark. Everything was settled in the pilot episode, and after that it was bad guy of the week.

This is going to be a fun reaction series. Buffy started with a new reactor with no idea what a "Vampire Slayer" is. Now we have a seasoned reactor (over 6,000,000 views on YouTube) who knows exactly what Supergirl is all about. Will they use the comic story where Supergirl was making out with her horse? (Action #311, 1964) :)

Love your reaction. Looking forward to your arrowverse reactions.

Daywalker

I remember watching this pilot and being disappointed with the casting of Jimmy Olsen because they picked such a studly guy to play JIMMY OLSEN. "James" Olsen is clearly a different character and I thought they could have kept the same actor and mostly the same storylines but give him a different name. Love Wynn and thought the writers wanted their cake and eat it too by having his character by Kara's side because he acts way more like the Jimmy Olsen I remember. Glad you're reacting to this and hope the schedule regulates because there's some good stuff coming.

Tammy L. Faulkner

I loved how you loved Kara... Blue is hotter than red btw.

Melissa is 100% what makes this show great

TheMew

Kryptonese is actually correct it's used to refer to the language which is what she was saying was written on the side of the thing with message from Alura. Kryptonian refers people or objects from Krypton. The word Kryptonese has been used in the comics and Smallville before.

Jordan Haddow

I get what you were saying about Jimmy Olsen. True, the story of superman was written in a time when black people being part of the story was never the case. It's always a little difficult when a character that has been so well known is changed drastically. I'm of the same mind that the change of race is nothing compared to the sexiness factor. Jimmy was a green bumbling boy who was always awed by everything. I think this Jimmy (or James) can do the awe thing well, but everything else about him is wrong. Your never gonna mistake that actor as a boy, unless your his grandmother's age. I'm also fairly certain they are pushing for a love interest for Kara. That's the only thing I could think. They have only so many main cast members they could have and so they couldn't add another for the love interest. So they made one of the group the love interest by upgrading him from boy to man. Also, I would like to mention that the computer nerd guy is not the one to be upgraded. That's a stereotype that can withstand the ages.

SweetMoonBeams

She seemed really upset that Jimmy was black....
