Kai would have needed to fly back to Virginia because Portland Oregon is over 4,500 km away. He probably did the spell to transport back to the real world while he was still in Portland, just in case it didn't work and he discovered he actually needed Bonnie to do the spell.

This will forever be the most frustrating TVD episode ever to me. "Oh yes, we will wait here to make pancakes and discuss our relationship instead of meeting Bonnie half way". Also, Elena really can make *everything* about herself, can't she? :D my poor BonBon :( the ending of the episode is always heart-breaking to me

The thing is, the father realized, Kai had found the Ascended in the prison world, since Damon was able to get out. So in away, it didn't matter if Damon got the Ascended, or even the rescue attempt for Bonnie.
