coven explanation (i don't think it's spoil much) : The Gemini Coven's tradition is rooted in a ritual called The Merge. This is how they select their leader; when a pair of twins are born into the coven, they undergo the Merge ceremony once they reach the age of twenty-two. During this ceremony, the stronger of the two would claim their twin's power and emerge with double the strength they previously held. Their weaker twin dies as a result, leaving the survivor to become the new leader of the Coven. The various members of the Gemini Coven apparently all bind their magic and life to the success of the Merge ritual, as it has been said that, should the leader of the Gemini Coven die before a new leader can replace them, then the rest of the coven will die as well

I'd like to think the gemini coven had split up after the massacre which is probably why jo didnt recognize the twins.

I might be wrong, but didn't Jo say in this or the previous episode that she stopped being a witch to leave her complicated family behind or sth like that? I mean, we know that the coven is still working, Liv and Luke talk about the coven a lot, but I think Jo has confirmed that she left her family a long time ago

It was revealed last episode that Kai is Jo's brother if you paid attention to both the stories Jo and Kai have told about their family.
