I think Davina did actually die and the spell brought her back, but that wouldn't complete the harvest ritual. They made a big deal about how the ritual had to be completed by one of the elders, which is why Sophie made Elijah promise he wouldn't let Klaus kill Agnes (but failed to ask him not to kill Agnes himself). Just Davina dying isn't enough to complete the ritual.
