You asked if we had seen this show. I was alive when it first aired, but only saw fragments of it. And then last year, I saw a lot of the third season, through reactors. You were right to sense the darkness. Twin Peaks does have humor once it gets going, and lots of dramatic byways. But it is dark. I cried a little to see Laura dead again. I was wondering whether this is a show that you should see to the end. I haven't seen it all, but I think it's accurate to say, that it maintains that soap-opera complexity, while also heading into emotional and spiritual territory that maybe no other TV show has ever touched. There are only three seasons. It would be slow at times, it would have slack periods, but it also gets very intense. Maybe one day...

Twin Peaks is pretty light on proper humor. Lots of characters with quirky traits is what you get instead. Weird cuts, music too loud, confusing stories - David Lynch tropes. Glad you had a chance to see this one. :)

I think this was one of the first serialized primetime shows in America. I love this show [particularly the original run] but I definitely don’t think it’s for everybody, and I’ve never seen anyone react to the original run. I saw this show around 2008 for the first time along with first two seasons of Lost[also love that show]. I tend to think of Riverdale [which I also liked] as a much more lighthearted hommage to this show. The show kind of felt like a low key dreadful dream, where something was always off and things didn’t quite connect properly [for example how the background music never matches the content of the scene playing out, or how certain dialogue felt out of place given the context], nothing quite went at the pace you thought it should and there was this underling feeling of dread permeating everything. It’s also a great breakdown/parody of soap operas. Also I love Kyle MacLachlan in almost everything he’s done. He often feels like a bigger than life person trapped in roles too small for him. It gives his characters a maniacal quality that keeps me on my toes, never quite sure what they will do or say. [I don’t know if that makes sense]. Love watching these pilot reactions….onto lost next chance I get…..dammed life and work getting in the way!! :)

I was a HUGE Twin Peaks fan. I had "Laura Palmers Diary" and used to freak my coworkers out by playing the soundtrack in my office. It's definitely an odd show, I can remember having dreams of certain scenes and still being frightened when I woke up. I agree with Shashank, there's a feeling of low-key dread that permeates the whole show, and it ramps up with each episode. It is a show that you have to pay very close attention to, and it's not everyones taste (hence it being cancelled). I'd be interested in seeing you react to "Quantum Leap". It was an incredible show.

I was completely sucked into Twin Peaks when it first aired. But I find it doesn’t hold up very well unless you remember the times when it came out. It was the first TV show to do a whole bunch of things. One of the first to have an ongoing story arc. One of the first to use super moody music and weird visuals to create a strong mood. And there is lots of humor in it, but a very dry kind of humor mostly in the way the characters were over-played. Bobby is the bad boy turned up to 11. Laura was the good girl who actually had a bad girl side. You have the stereotypical diner waitresses, the slick but unscrupulous business man, and of course the straight-laced FBI agent ... but with the twist that he’s very youthful and enthusiastic about things. Just a lot of mixed and remixed pieces of slightly vintage popular culture, with a ton of mood thrown in. At the time, there had never been anything like it on TV, and for about a season and a half it was incredibly exciting. But now all of those “new” qualities aren’t new anymore, so it’s not quite as effective. It still gives me chills though! And the mysterious elements become more prominent as the story progresses.

It is interesting you would say it is 'too real' as I watched it with my two flatmates earlier this year and one of them couldn't stand the over-the-top theatrical acting and the silly humour. The show does go to some real dark places, especially in the movie, which goes back in time to show us Laura's life. Thanks for your reaction. I'll try to come up with something more light hearted for next month :)
